To be cast out of the presence of God and Jesus Christ forever, never to return, it a hell in itself, is it not?
The realization of your own failure is your own 'burning'. One that become forever, since you are forever cast away from the presence of Jesus Christ and God.

A rather cold and uninviting place, if you ask me.

The word 'hell' itself comes from the Prose Erda (a viking religion)...and refers to an 'underworld' where the dwarves live and work, using their fires and forges. It is also known as Hel. It is also known as a place of concealment, for the dwarves are never seen in the land of Man. It has also been used to refer to a place of the dead.

When the Bible was translated from Hebrew and Greek into English, the word 'hell' was used to refer to this cast out status, taking the image of being cast into a lower state of glory (essentially no state of glory).

The Latin languages found in the Bible used Hades, an actual place. The Hebrew used Gehenna, an actual place (a lonely desert valley). This valley is also known for it's high temperatures. A pergatory.

Those that are already miserable, suffering the torment of their own failures, are already in a 'hell'.
Whether that would be a permanent, everlasting state, is up the decision of Jesus Christ and God. Those that fight Christ and God will be recognized by Christ and God, and cast from their presence, since such a person cannot abide the presence of either.

Since such a person cannot abide by either's presence, so they must leave their presence...forever.

Bearing lies and false witness puts you in danger of a hell. You will be locked into your misery of what you have done, unless you repent and do everything you can to repair the damage you have done, both to yourself, and to others you have crossed. You spend your energy covering for your lies. You are damned from further progression until you can overcome this. The only way out is to repent...not an easy process, but it's worth going through.

If you have done this, you can be redeemed from your temporary hell, for Jesus Christ has paid your price of your transgression.
If you refuse to do this, and cannot abide by such a wonderful gift, you are left to yourself...forever cut off from the presence of Christ and God.

THAT is the real 'hell'...a misery and a loneliness so complete you 'gnaw your own tongue for pain'.

Now if you prefer to use the Viking version, or the Hebrew use of Gehenna to visualize a place of misery, fine...but realize where these terms come from and the simile they represent.
