White Women’s Rage: 5 Thoughts on Why Jan Brewer Should Keep Her Fingers to Herself

If that had been any ordinary citizen they wouldn't have got anywhere near any president, whether he was pink, brown or blue with green polka dots.

That is so not true. The President shakes hands with folks everyday, under the watchful eye of the Secret Service.

What is wrong with this picture?

1.) He is the President. She is being disrespectful. As hell. Period. Point Blank. End of Discussion.

2.) White privilege conditions white people not to see white rage. However, it makes them hyper-aware of Black threat. Newt Gingrich is white rage personified. And for it, he gets loads of applause. So is Jan Brewer, but usually we think of white rage in masculine terms. Gender stereotypes condition us not to see white women as being capable of this kind of dangerous emotional output. We reserve our notions of female anger for Black women. Such hidden race-gender logics allow Brewer to assert that she “felt threatened,” even though she was trying to handle the situation “with grace.” Now look back at the picture: who is threatening whom? Couple white rage with white women’s access to the protections that have been afforded to their gender, and you have something that looks ironically like white female privilege. Yes (yes, yes), the discourse of protection is based upon problematic and sexist stereotypes of white women as dainty and unable to care for themselves, and yes, these stereotypes have caused white women to be oppressed by white men. But remember, gender does not exist in a racial vacuum. It is performed in highly racialized contexts, and history proves that what constitutes oppression for white women in relation to white men, dually constitutes privilege for white women in relation to Black men. (I’m not spoiling for a fight today, so anybody who feels uncomfortable with such assertions should probably go read some Patricia Hill Collins, Black Sexual Politics and then try again.) What I know is this: 100 years ago (less than, actually) a Black man even standing that close to a white woman would’ve gotten him lynched. (Seriously, I just discovered that even accommodationist Booker T. Washington was beaten in New York in 1911 for talking to a white woman.) And I know that if a Black woman had wagged her finger at Bush II or even Bill Clinton, we would have seen her faced down, handcuffed, with Secret Service swarming. When your race and gender grant you opportunities to be treated with dignities that others don’t have or conversely, to heap indignities on those people, that is what we call privilege. Deal with it.

3.) Unchecked white rage has always been dangerous for Brown and Black folk in America. Jan Brewer’s Arizona is not safe for Brown people and by implication, not safe for Black people (Presidents included). Not only has she terrorized and racially profiled immigrant communities, but she has gutted one of the model Ethnic Studies programs for high school students in this country. If there were ever a time for Black and Brown solidarity, it is now. And hell, lest we forget, Arizona is not even safe for white women. It is the vitriolic racial climate that Brewer’s anti-immigrant, anti-Latino policies have helped to foment that led to the violence against Gabby Giffords.

(It’s amazing what different stories these two pictures tell.)

4.) This picture demonstrates something important. The logic of racial supremacy dictates that white people are most comfortable when people of color do the affective labor involved in maintaining white supremacy. (No disrespect to Gabby Giffords: of course, I don’t think this hug shared between colleagues supports white supremacy. But this kind of bodily connection is important for humanizing Black public figures, and it is the logic of that which I’m getting at.) Historically, it was not enough to be placed in positions of servitude; affecting an attitude of subservience was also critically important. Failure to be deferential could get you killed, even if you were doing the tasks at hand. The term “uppity Negro” hasn’t always been a slogan to rock proudly on a t-shirt. Something happens when Black and Brown folks decide that we do not exist in the world to make white people comfortable. And white folks feel it. This is why a movie like The Help so powerfully resonates with White America, and with countless facets of Black America as well. The affective labor of white supremacy prefers Black people in certain postures, like for instance dishing out hugs and words of affirmation to little white girls who will become white women that they, indeed, “is smart, is kind, is important.”

(Referencing the critically acclaimed film, The Help):

As if the world would ever teach anything different. The effect of such labor is powerful: white America feels more comfortable with the disturbing realities of racism, and Black people can convince ourselves that our humanity, and indeed, our struggle is being acknowledged. Even her well-deserved Oscar nomination has not convinced Viola Davis of such ridiculousness. (And um, would someone help Charlize Theron get a clue?)

5.) Finally, I just have to say it: If Jan Brewer and any other bad-ass wants to leave here with the fingers and toes they came here with, I would suggest they keep their hands to themselves. Because frankly, I wish a*&%$# would wag a finger in my face… Kudos to the President for keeping his cool.

Great post Poet,

I love that NOT one word has been metioned about this from OUR PRESIDENT.

The man is class personafied.

I remember all the calls from the right to RESPECT the presidency when Bush was tearing us a great big new one.

respect is earned and does not come automatically.

Obama is changing what this country thinks about its self.

His wise and unpretencious manner is just more than the haters can handle.

He deserves the respect they claimed BUSH should have simply because he cheated his way into office and had that crime sacntioned by the Scotus.

I say any president should realize any citizen can wave their finger in his or her face.

Now I NEVER want to hear any fucking right winger claim we should be forced to respect any asshole they manage to cheat the American people to get into office.

That will be the ONLY way any more of them will get elected.

They cant win on ideas, their ideas are historical failures.

You go ahead and wag your fingers in the face of our ACTUALLY elected President you right wing clowns and pretend you have done something brave.

Look at Obamas face while she does it.

He is respectful and kind in his expression.

Something the right has no idea about anymore.

The have NO kindness left in their hearts.

They have no respect left in their hearts.

They refuse to admitt what their ideas did to this country.

They refuse to admitt what their ideas did to the entire world.

They refuse the cold hard evidence that shows they were not even voted into that control by the people.

The days of their ideas winning elections is over.

They will soon know that and will never recover.

The republican party will die or change.

If they continue to be the lacky of the wealthy they will die.

If they come back on board the ship of democracy ( current republicans even spew hate on that word) and fight in the name of all the people instead of just the wealthy then they will be welcomed back into the fold.

After all REPUBLICAN is just a name and the minute the party actually loves democracy again I will welcome by brothers home.

Until then they are the cancer that is trying to shrink us until it can drown us in the bathtub.

Black people have a right to be pissed at you cavemen trying to revisit the days before civil rights.

I cant believe in 2012 we are having to listen fat ugly sociopaths make racist comments and droves of idiots stand in the audience and applaud.

Havent you people done enough harm to this American family already with your wars for lies and regulations so loose (and what laws were there ignored) that the economy was turned into a casino game for the wealthy?

No you have to double down by constantly insulting our black brothers and sisters with your "food stamp president" smears and claiming the only reason black people vote is to keep their welfare.

Then you have the audacity to claim not wanting the wealthy to have complete control of our system is "Class warfare".

look you clowns if this is class warfare then your wealthy people are the only ones who have any weapons.

Poor rich people are being beat up by the rest of us who they recently made poorer in an historic asset grab.

How many people have to have their lies distroyed before you see that its merely self fucking defense?

I understand that there was a certain element of the help that may have promoted the sterotype of the mammy.

I am glad that the black community is pointing this out about the movie and the people I have talked to about the movie I have mentioned this particular aspect and discussed it.

"Something happens when Black and Brown folks decide that we do not exist in the world to make white people comfortable. And white folks feel it."

I love this part of your statement.

No person no matter who they are has to come to this realization.

Not one person on this world should walk it thinking they are there to make one other person comfortable.

Salvery and its aftermath in this country has produced this dementia in many a human.

Im a white 50 something female and have felt its plauge.

Every human has to give their own life reason.

It can NOT come from any other being on this planet.

I loved the movie you mentioned and cried.

I had heard the criticism of the movie before I watched it and kept it in mind while I watched it.

I think the movie moved beyond it it some ways.

They were not just happy mammies.

They were human beings trying to make their way with dignity in a world gone mad.

I loved the main charactor and her story of being a 13 year old girl told to take care of the baby.

She says she learned that she could make a child feel good about themselves through her actions.

The film DID NOT do enough with her son.

they barely referanced him.

THAT is where the GOLD in this film lied.

Her son was raised by her to feel his self power and was killed as a young man.

She had the spirit of love for human kind in her so strong that it did not distory her ability to imbue that love into any child she came accrossed, including a little chubby white girl whos own mother could not muster such spirit.

These women endured a life of humiliation at the hands of lesser beings.

They did not transfer it to the children.

How can they be represented in any more honarable a way.

I know it placed a few decent white people in it and that number was WAY above the true number the real women who had to live that druggery ever encountered but there were some in history.

A healthy society would NEVER ask ANY human being to live their lives as if their only reason to live was to make others comfortable.

All healthy societies need human beings willing reach out to the next generation and compell them to be the best humans they can be no matter the sins of their parents.

These women were in my mind NOT protraying the Mammy stereotype they were portraying the higher being stereotype.

They are neither completely true.

We all know that not every black woman is the higher being stereotype or the Mammy stereotype.

What we all do know is its our choice which path we make for ourselves.

Blacks, whites, Native Americans, Men, women, parapelgic or whatever.

We all have obstacles and we overcome them best when we learn from each other and encourage each other.

This was a slice of life movie.

We got a glimpse of how these women handled their obstacles.

I for one was inspired by these women.

I really dont think it came of of seeing them as the happy mammy stereotype.

It came from their ability to NOT lay the burden of the sins of their fathers on the children.

Does anyone have a REAL quote from a reliable source as to what exactly was that conversation about? Because for all I know, she could have just been shooting the breeze and getting over-animated.

If it's as it seems, then I'm not surprised due to the historically documented lack of respect this President has gotten from the press and members of the house and senate. A black man in power is threatening to a lot of non-black folk in America....a congenital disease that has yet to be rooted from the American gene pool.

Also, what's that about Charlize Theron?

Of course. ID is an idiot. Of course the Brewer/Obama incident had everything to do with him being black and her being white. Here was yet, another opportunity to undermine the president, publicly, whom so many on the right believe to be illegitimate and an usurper, and who better than Jan Brewer, the firebrand from AZ, to show him who's boss. She became an instant heroine for the right....putting President Obama "in his place", with a wag of her finger in his face. President Obama kept his cool and let a fool be a fool, and walked away, and emerged as "the class act", again. The arrogance of a president compared to that of a governor? Anyone in their right mind would understand who would be entitled to the deference.

FYI: http://en.terra.com/latin-in-america/news/crazy_stuff_racists_say_special_jan_brewer_edition/hof9645

Ever notice that the word "arrogance" has been a constant in the neocon/teabagger rants and raves against Obama the second (if not earlier) he took the oath of office? If the guy so much as smiles, he's "arrogant" ..... another historical bias against a competant and/or successful black man in this society.

The Shrub took about 3 years before he could make decent speeches or not look the total jackass in a press conference....and the yahoos that are having a fit because you point out the BS of Brewer made excuses and defended him to the bitter end.

But then, you're a liar and a coward; so you comments are nothing but the whinings of a neglected brat.

Didn't Billy Clinton have much the same charges levelled at him? I think it's more about an anti-intellectual bias rather than a race question, apart from the South of course.

As usual, you're an idiot. First of all, despite her insanity, she's a Governor of a state, and afforded the courtesies and the respect of the office (the very thing she denied President Obama), so unless she had a weapon or presented a direct threat to the President ( who is fully capable of handling a mentally deranged woman, as we saw), the Secret Service would not have acted.
My point was, in our "double standard" society, if the President had been white, and the finger pointer an ordinary black citizen, he would have been "splayed", in a New York minute, and hauled off to jail, if not shot. You don't want to know what I wish for Brewer.

Now you've gone from being a coward and a liar, to being a fucking idiot also. :D

No one yelled "Lie" during any of Clinton's addresses to the Congress. And as much as the GOP gunned for Clinton, the officials left the slavering bias to the likes of Limbaugh, and ALWAYS gave Clinton the courtesy of respect of the Office...until old Newt led that walkout and stall tactic (before he got booted in disgrace). After that, the kangaroo court like scene regarding Whitewater and Lewinsky was off the scale....STILL a modicum of restraint and respect was held by the media and critics alike.

Now-a-days, the so called "legitimate" critics in the media just add a few 5 syllable words to their diatribes to distance themselves from the likes of Hannity and O'Reilly....but the content and intent is the same.....Obama is NOT to be respected, and he MUST be seen as a failure.

I can't help thinking that US politics has now entered a very dark era and it will be norm from now on. Having said that, there have been some pretty nasty campaigns in the past.
