I have worked on both sides of that equation. My first postdoc was in publicly funded science. My career was spent largely in industry. Industry pales in comparison to public-funded research. As noted earlier about 50% of blockbuster drugs are created from NIH-funded research.
In the area I was in most of the scientists gave up cushy high paying industry jobs for the more academically interesting but lower paying work in government. The patents we created were specifically made to be either licensed for free to the public or at a reduced license fee.
It was a net benefit for the USA to have this research. This is research that is critical but hard to justify for a corporation (too far in the weeds for immediate productization). That's why things like Apollo produced SO MANY advances in healthcare and technology.
The electric grid: largely put into rural America through GOVERNMENTAL PROGRAMS like TVA and Rural Electrification.
Networking: Again, the internet was actually developed by publicly funded researchers at CERN and within the US government.
