You have to remember, outside of St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia is pretty much a Trud World country. So, as long as Putin keeps the people in those two cities reasonably happy, the rest of the country really doesn't matter politically.
 
The Russians are not suffering because of sanctions, Russia is better for them, it has forced them to stop relying on unreliable trading partners and do for themselves and find better friends.

It is Europe that takes the hits.

Either way, the threat of economic sanctions according to the UK defense minister, carries no weight with Putin.

Hence, the Alaska summit was likely little more than a photo op for him.

Putin has been telling the people of Russia that sanctions will not go away until the Imperial Empire gets much further into their collapse, and that they are good for Russia, bad for the Empire.

Putins main mission is to speed up the collapse of the Empire, and protect Russia from damage as best he can.....this meeting was in support of that.

If the Russian leadership did not care about sanctions then why did they do so much highly successful work starting around 2012 to get ready for sanctions?

They cared.....the Russian leadership does not want the Russian people to suffer....but if suffering comes the Russian people will do it.....this Imperial Empire project of breaking Russia is moronic hubris.
