I'm going to assume this was little more than a severely mentally ill individual who has gotten taken up in the polarization in this country. He listened to too many demonizations of folks on the Left and decided to act on his own.

Sure, it might be "political" in that one nutter was listening to the discourse too much and lost it.

Maybe that's an indicator that we all need to dial it back a bit?

The guy is a homeless, drug addicted illegal alien from Canada with a long list of felonies. In other words, a typical California street denizen just looking for his next fix. I wonder if he's been released yet?

Sure. I'm not saying it was totally random. I'm clearly saying it is part and parcel of the ongoing demonization of each other that people are doing based on politics.
