The vaccines are working, the data suggests.
Active Cases are rising quickly. We were looking at hitting 10.4 million but yesterday blew that off and rocketed up to 10.5 million in one day. At the same time, Serious and Critical Cases are still rising, but not as quickly. Now at 15,830.
What that tells us is that a lot of people are testing positive, but many of them are not needing to be hospitalized.
Two factors could be in play:
1. The new cases are mostly among unvaccinated, and Omicron is not as severe,
and
2. There are a lot of new crossover cases, but since they are vaccinated, the vaccines are preventing their condition from getting serious.
What we are seeing is probably a combination of the two, but Dr Fauci said it is too soon to tell how severe Omicron is.

Looking back at the numbers, there is an evident weekly trend of a lull in reporting over the weekends, which takes a few days to 'catch up.' The weekly trends have been for the highest weekly numbers to be on Thursday - Friday, and the lowest numbers to be on Sunday - Tuesday.
Seeing 143K new cases on a Monday is a huge spike.
Omicron is definitely coming on strong, the data shows.
