Ah! Using the Law of Large Numbers, bad statistics, and a preconceived set of outcomes, this "study" arrived at that conclusion. If you scroll down to the BLM riots here:

What the researchers--I use that term loosely--did was include every small and even miniscule protest in their database diluting the ones where violence was present. If you look at their map, as the protests grew larger the propensity for violence at them approached 100%. That is, the largest protests created the most violence and dwarfed in size the smaller ones included in the sample to a point of irrelevance. The researchers made no effort to differentiate on size. Thus, in their sample a "protest" involving say a dozen protesters was counted equally to one involving over a thousand.
The researchers also make the mistake of accepting as true that the police and other government law enforcement were the primary, if not only, progenitors of violence at these protests. That is, their assertion is that if the police just stood by passively and let the protesters do whatever there would not have been violence or the violence would have been minimal. That's clearly nonsense too.
