Gabbard, encouraged by Trump, may seek spoiler role

t is not exactly breaking news that Tulsi Gabbard will not win the Democratic presidential nomination. Since announcing her candidacy in January, the U.S. House member from Hawaii has never polled higher than 2 percent in the RealClearPolitics polling average.

That may not stop Gabbard from mounting a third-party White House bid and having a major impact on the 2020 election, and one person who is welcoming that prospect is President Trump.

I give her respect,” Trump said of Gabbard during a Florida speech over the weekend at the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit. “She didn’t vote the other day. I give her a lot of respect because she knew it was wrong. She took a pass.”

Gabbard explained that her vote of “present” on the two articles of impeachment against Trump was meant to break the “zero-sum game” of political gridlock in Washington.

In a statement, Gabbard further explained why she didn’t vote “no” on the articles.

“I could not in good conscience vote against impeachment because I believe President Trump is guilty of wrongdoing,” Gabbard, who favored a congressional censure of Trump, said.

All but three House Democrats — Gabbard and two others, one of whom, Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, has said he is leaving the party to become a Republican — voted for the first article of impeachment. Her position drew criticism from others in the party.

“I think that when you’re a leader you have to take a position, and I just disagree with her vote,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said.

While Gabbard hasn’t been campaigning in either Michigan or Wisconsin this year, she has focused her efforts in another potential swing state in 2020: New Hampshire. She has moved there to campaign ahead of the Feb. 11 primary, and a November Quinnipiac poll shows that while she is receiving 6 percent support from likely Democratic voters, she is the first choice among voters who self-identify as independents (10 percent).

Given the bad blood between Gabbard and the Democratic Party, it’s easy to imagine her pursuing a third-party run.

Gabbard would make an attractive 3rd party candidate lol.
Trump was the first repub to call out the party on their hypocrisy and tell it like it is. Tulsi is the first to call out the dim party on theirs and speak the truth. Dims should take note for the future.

Democrats haven’t settled their moderate vs radical civil war yet.

Since there’s no compromising with the radicals I wonder if a third national party might eventually rise out of it.

So Trump called out someone else on their hypocrisy you say....

Make no mistake, Tulsi is far left. What's unusual about her is she's willing to speak the truth about DNC corruption. Did you happen to notice not a peep out of hrc after insinuating Tulsi was a Russian agent and Tulsi called her out on her being a war monger and embodiment of corruption?

No chance, at least in our lifetimes. Dims consider her a traitor for calling out DNC corruption and speaking the truth. Dims need a major earthquake like Trump was to repubs. I'd at least have respect for them, if not agreeing with most of their policies, if they purged the corruption that is deeply embedded in their party.

I misread the cards when Gabbard first entered the race.

I was thinking she could threaten Trump because she checks a couple SJW boxes, she’s antiwar and she’s a socialist. But the ‘anti-war’ Democrats ran from her over the fact she met with Assad and something-something Putin likes Assad or whatever. And when she got the ridiculous ‘Russian asset’ label she was as good as done.

I don't follow her close enough so this is not a rhetorical question. If you're on the (far) left why would you support Gabbard over Sanders?

She is a much a socialist as Darth Omar, and Trump does not want her in the race, because she will take many of his voter,

Gabbard wasn’t born when Lincoln was President lol.

She’s very well-spoken. A combat veteran. Consistently, anti-war. Socialist. She’s tough—she single handedly took down Harris in one of the debates. It was brutal, Harris never recovered.

On paper, she’s the Democrats dream candidate.

But...she’s a Russian asset lol. The left side of the Democrat Party has lost their marbles over Trump and Russia. Literally.

Gabbard is anti- war ( interventionism) sanders has some junk idea of interventionism by coalition.
Specifically Gabbard also endorses realpolitik.

exactly.. The Dems have to blame da Russians for 2o16, and Gabbard goes against that .
She is very tough, and took Harris apart when she attacked Gabbard

A centrist takes moderate positions. I'm extreme in most of mine. E.g., abortion - I'm pro death. Guns - repeal the 2nd amendment, until that is accomplished we should be allowed to mount at least three M61 Vulcan Gatling guns on our vehicles for personal protection. Or at least in high crime dim controlled cities.

Didn’t Bernie do that to a degree? He doesn’t even call himself a Democrat.

Neither Gabbard or Bernie have any appeal to me but Bernie has a passionate following and as the last election showed some of his supporters don’t automatically vote Democratic.

Being on the right it’s great when someone on the left calls out the DNC. But is the RNC really that different? They exist to win and maintain power.

How’s that different than Bernie though? Again, I readily admit I haven’t paid close enough attention but the only people I see who really like her are a small subset of Trump supporters.

Edit: and I haven’t seen any Trump supporter say they would vote for Gabbard over Trump (not to say they don’t exist I just haven’t seen it)
