A 17-year-old boy was arrested today on charges he plotted to set off explosives at Freedom High School, which expelled him last year.


Jared Michael Cano was charged with threatening to throw, project, place or discharge a destructive device. Cano also faced charges of possession of bomb-making materials, cultivation of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.


Police said they found a diary with minute-by-minute plans to carry out the plot, including a reference that he wanted to exceed the casualty count of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado. Thirteen people died at that school before the shooters killed themselves.


Tampa police received a tip about 11:50 a.m. Tuesday that Cano was planning to discharge explosive devices on campus. The bombing was planned for Aug. 23, the first day of school in Hillsborough County, police said.


Police Chief Jane Castor said that if the plan had been carried out, it would have been a "catastrophic event the likes of which the city of Tampa has never seen."


Castor said police received a tip shortly before noon Tuesday from someone familiar with Cano's plot. About 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, police went to Cano's home, where his mother – a teacher at Riverview High School – consented to a search of the apartment.


Police found a fuel source, shrapnel, plastic tubing, timing and fusing devices, all materials that could be used to make a device powerful enough to kill, Castor said.


She said Cano has a lengthy criminal record and has been on the radar of police. He recently was arrested on a burglary charge, stemming from a break-in at which a firearm had been stolen.

There is no reference to anyone named Jared in the Bible. I suspect, highly religious Christians might name their kid John, Paul, Matthew, Luke, Mark, Zacharia.. but not Jared, it makes no logical sense whatsoever... but then, look who this is coming from?


"rightwing Christians?" Is that, opposed to "leftwing Christians" or something? The Bible says a Christian is a Christian, and we can tell by their actions, not words. Now, I don't happen to believe everything in the Bible, for instance, I think we can tell by your words that you are neither a left or right wing Christian, you don't believe in Christianity, you don't have religious Spirituality, you worship Liberalism instead. It's perfectly natural, we all have to believe in something and have faith in it, even though you claim you don't, it's apparent.

I bet a majority of Christians don't know Jared (or Jered) is even in the Bible... imagine that, now you can say you know more about the word of God than most Christians! Aren't you proud of yourself for going and learning that now? I am proud of you, it shows curiosity, and willingness to learn the truth, so there is still hope for you!

Jared was a forefather of Noah. Jared's age was given as 962 years old when he died, making him the second-oldest person mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, so he is mentioned in the Bible. the Book of Enoch, which Jesus quoted as sacred scripture but was left out of the compilation at Trent, mentions Jared, also, the spelling can also be Jered, so there is a reference to "anyone named Jared in the Bible"

Christians have adopted it as part of their sacred scripture and use many Old Testament names.
