Sorry, but this is quite ridiculous. He was fired for sharing his feelings on this? He stated that we have to be careful not to be bigoted, but he had to be honest that he did a double take when in airports when he saw people in Muslim garb as it made him nervous.

If we can't have honest discussions about how things make us feel, then we have NO chance to resolve differences.

One more reason NPR should lose all federal funding. They are too ignorant to exist.

I thought the action was somewhat extreme, but what would your reaction be to a statement like this:

"I'm not prejudiced in any way, but being in close proximity to black people makes me really uncomfortable."

That's an interesting question.

I feel that the public funding is a red herring. I thought NIgel did a great job on the other thread about this, in laying out just how little of their funding comes from federal grants. I feel that the right uses that red herring as an excuse to cover their own hypocrisy for cheering when Helen Thomas was fired.

I personally would not have fired either one of them.

I do wonder how many people, assuming you either fly and/or use mass transit in a major US city, have never once, since 9/11, been on a plane, or in a subway car with a young male of apparent Arab-descent, wearing a backpack or carrying a bag, had an unpleasant thought or two.

I will admit that I have.

Before anyone gets to crying about Juan Williams, he got a $2 million deal from FOX today where he can feel free to talk about how right BillO is in being a bigoted asshole.

I don't feel sorry for him Nigel, I personally think he's an asshole, but I do dislike the be careful what you say atmosphere. You know you can't say anything about Israel other than "I Love Israel" and you can't even express sympathy for the Palestinians without a shitstorm. And as far as this goes, how do you ever work through stuff as a society without talking about it?

Well.....IF....IF ....IF......

If black people were blowing up fuckin' bus terminals, airplanes, resturants, shopping malls, movie theaters, or anything resembling these actions.....I would say it a perfectly NORMAL reaction....for whites, blacks, reds, Asians, hispanics, and even assholes like you;;;;;;;;

and you are a pathetic fool......

This is what people don't get; it's a fine line - not even a line really - between what Juan & O'Reilly say, and the raw hate that bravo is expressing above.

Its' weird. I'm not a "pc" guy, but when I hear people talk about the mosque & their opposition & Muslims, all I really hear is pretty blatant bigotry.

Well, Juan Williams is not an opinion columnist. Society can talk about these issues freely. Juan Williams can talk about this stuff freely. But he can't do it appearing on an opinion program while wearing the NPR news analyst hat. And NPR doesn't have to put up with it.

This sounds very PC! Seriously though, the Park51/Mosque project is something that is completely based in bigotry and plenty of hate. It's interesting that Lazio tried to work that you know? But who can out-hate a teabagger? So now we have Palidino, and even though polls were showing that even a majority of NY state residents were against the project, I guess they forgot to ask how important it was to them? Because Palido is sinking so badly that the NY Gop now fears he is going to be a drag on tickets state-wide. :clink:

You know what, I really need to read the whole transcript. I only saw one quick outtake, and it didn't seem too bad, but Rachel now is showing a whole segment of pure hate coming out of Fox, just unimaginable. If he was agreeing with any of that stuff...I will have to read everything about it first.

I reluctantly have to agree with your words......I too dislike the "careful what you say atmosphere........it freakin' ridiculous sometimes.....

If you hate Israel....shout it out....don't be afraid....if you have sympathy for Palestine, speak up........if you're an anti-American Muslim, stand up and be counted.......
this tip-toeing around the truth and what you really believe is just living a lie.......

Its sad that we are unable to voice our own thoughts and fears. I didn't see that the guy said anything bad about anyone. He was saying how HE felt. I never thought much of him, but firing him for this makes open and honest discourse even more difficult.

I'm fine with that, too; just know you're a bigot, as well. It's the same as saying "I'm anti-African American," or "I'm anti-Jew."

Really, it's the same as saying "wake up, white people!"

This is not hate, you moron....this is living with reality.....this is being aware of potential danger....this is COMMON SENSE.....

If I come out of a diner with my wife at midnight, and see 5 guys milling around a corner, bullshitting and having a good time...I go the other way....I don't put myself or my family in potential danger...I don't give a fuck if they a white, black, or god damn polka dot......I use discretion.....even if I'm carrying, I use discretion.....

Onceler is a mystery at times....usually a pinhead, often pwned, ill prepared for most debate, sarcastic when cornered, ......yet....
Sometimes he actually gives the impression of being relatively level-headed and reasonable.....I wonder if hes ever been examined for Dissociative identity disorder?

you see things and read things that don't fuckin' exist....come to conclusions that only a pinhead can given the facts stated....
I take it you're black...I didn't know that before...it explains a lot....you're a racist and don't realize it.

Do you feel that only black people can become upset over racism?

From the guy who has said that Muslims are "barbarians."

Can you tell me the fundamental difference between saying "I'm anti-American Muslim" and "I'm anti-Jew"?

Or any difference?

Absolutely not.....I understand that ANYONE can become a racist.....
and I understand that SOME may have a very valid reason to become racist....white or black

I don't condone it...but I sympathize with those that reach that point....some might have experienced something that caused it....its not their fault .... it s the fault of human nature.....

Would it have made a major difference if I said SOME Mulsims are barbarians?

In general...NOT IN TOTALITY......are Mulsims barbarians....do they cut off hands and arms...?
Do they actually bury women up to their necks and stone them to death..?
Do the actually demand a women have 3 or 4 male witnesses to confirm
they were raped....?
Do they actually murder their sisters and daughters for perceived sins..?

YOU TELL ME.....IN GENERAL....are Mulsims barbarians ????
