Worst Oil Spills

To keep some sense of perspective Ixtoc I and the Atlantic Empress were as big, if not bigger than the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The Amoco Cadiz was in the same league. All of these were cleaned up and have left no lasting damage. Once the hysteria has worn off, hopefully a more objective view will prevail.

I think we're all going to back off from offshore drilling until we get a better handle of how we can make it safe.

We have to take care of this issue. I am amazed at how difficult it seems to be to get people interested in alternative energy. I was happy to see what Secretary Salazar did offshore, up in the Massachusetts area, and that took seven years to get that done. Alternative energy is what we need to move to as rapidly as we can.

Although obviously our immediate task is to deal with a crisis that is affecting millions of people down in the Gulf, we can’t keep our eye off the importance of having an energy policy that meets the needs of the next generation and ensures that the United States is the leader when it comes to energy policy.

We are not yet that leader, and that’s what I want us to do.

In which case, you need to instigate a huge programme of new nuclear power stations combined with wind, tidal, geothermal and solar power.

Ahh it's still leaking thousands of gallons per hour.

The Amoco Cadiz resulted in an enormous amount of crude ending up in the English Channel in one fell swoop. This was in waters with an average depth of less than 100 metres, all the concerns about the tourism and fishing industries, currently being discussed in the US, were also expounded in France and England. This happened in waters much colder than in the Gulf, but there were no long term damage to either industries.

why is it that Europe, more liberal than the most American liberal, has no problem with nuclear energy, yet our liberals go ballistic at the mere thought of it?.......

Because ass clowns like you would have nuclear engineers cutting corners making the clean up a lot deadlier.
