Wisconsin set to require photo identification to vote

MADISON, Wis (Reuters) – The Wisconsin state Senate on Thursday approved a Republican-backed bill that would require photo identification to vote, and Republican Governor Scott Walker is expected to sign the measure into law.

Debate over the proposal again highlighted the partisan divisions in Wisconsin after the recent bruising battle over Walker's campaign to weaken public sector union bargaining rights that sparked massive pro-union demonstrations.

Ten states now require a photo ID to vote. Kansas also added a photo ID requirement this year, which takes effect January 1. Thirty-three states have considered adding or strengthening voter identification requirements this year, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The Republican-controlled Wisconsin Senate voted 19 to 5 along party lines to concur in a state Assembly bill approved earlier in May also along party lines. Most Senate Democrats did not cast votes on the proposal. It requires voter identification in polling places and eliminates straight ticket voting among other provisions.

"Requiring photo identification to vote will go a long way to eliminate the threat of voter fraud," Walker said in a statement. "If you need an ID to buy cold medicine, it's reasonable to require it to vote."

Democrats said the measure was aimed at discouraging many of their constituents, especially college students and poor residents, rather than addressing vote fraud, which they said was not a serious problem in the state.

"In the end what we are doing here, it is very simple and very clear ...," Democratic Senator Jon Erpenbach said. "This is all about taking away rights of taxpayers in the state of Wisconsin and you should be ashamed."

why are left wingers in such a tizzy over this? poor people can get ID's, and likely can get a waiver of any fees. to suggest that college students don't have ID is freaking absurd...even if they don't have a regular ID (extremely unlikely) they have to have a college ID. i don't believe there is a single college student that does not have ID. and please...who is so poor they can't get an ID. left wing hysteria at its finest...

The problem Yurt is that many of the college students... especially at UW (in Madison) are from other states and don't have an idea with a local address. That said, if I were to pick ANY group in the state of WI that would commit voter fraud, it would be the students at UW (keep in mind, I am a Marquette Alum). While they wouldn't vote twice in the WI election, the twits would vote both in WI and again in their home state.... though that was over 20 years ago and I would hope verification methods have improved since then.

Voter ID laws do not solve any real electoral fraud problems. Voter impersonation is extremely rare and not a particularly effective way to steal an election. With respect to students, a voter ID law isn't going to prevent them from voting twice. They're stupid and the only reason Republicans like them is that it makes it more of a pain in the ass for people to vote and, to the extent they dissuade or prevent people from voting, the people most likely dissuaded or prevented are likely Democratic voters.

how does requiring ID dissuade people from voting? if you don't have a proper ID, you most likely should not be voting. as long as those who cannot afford an ID get a financial waiver, no one can claim they cannot get an ID, therefore, no one will be prevented from voting. dems hate this because they believe illegals will vote for them.

this law would not stop that. as long as you're registered and have proper ID, you can vote. i'm not sure how you would stop them voting twice with our current system.

"If you need an ID to buy cold medicine, it's reasonable to require it to vote."...............???

I guess you're not worried that they can't by cold medicine without a photo ID, huh ?

Why do you say that someone what does not have an ID should not be voting? Why not? That makes no sense.

And illegals can't register to vote so they can't vote, with or without ID.

No, not really. There are a number of cold remedies that do not contain pseduoephedrine hydrochloride that are effective and available without an ID.

If the ID had a picture and was specific to voting with a numerical electronic value that is swiped through a machine upon entering a polling place it could not be defrauded. Too the ID would have to be granted via a national ID such as SS# to prevent dual state voting....it can be done.

Please show evidence of availability of said financial waiver.

This atitude is a big part of our countries problem. Jean ValJean still lives.
