California, whose economy is the largest in the nation and would rank ninth in the world if the state were a country, has struggled for decades with a tax system in which property tax increases are limited by law and tax hikes of any kind must be approved by voter initiatives or a two-thirds vote of the legislature.

High income and sales taxes produce plenty of revenue in good times but fall sharply in a recession, while spending on schools, prisons and medical care for the poor and elderly is hard to adjust.

The deeper deficit forecast reflects the state's uneven economic recovery: tax collections this year have fallen about $4 billion below projections...

Will the unions stop sucking the state dry with their overpriced pensions and benefits that the democrats gave them over the years???

On the national level, we definitely need to increase taxes on the wealthy. But taxes in CA are already too high. Raising taxes to close the deficit in CA will likely result in businesses leaving the state, which will only make the deficit worse.

In the budget argument I think there is merit to both sides, we dont have money, so either taxes need to be raised accumulating more money, or programs need to be cut reducing cost. We have elected for option 3, neither.

"Likely"?

So how do you propose to close the deficit?

Will the politicians stop stealing from the people with crony capitalism?
Will they end the bankrupting wars on drugs and "terrorists"?

Without the modest wage equalizing effect of even the 7% of civilian union members, wage slavery would be overwhelmingly opressive

If someone has a pension and benefits that person worked for it. The gov. doesn't give anybody anything you racist, ignorant, fascist fuck.

Please try to grow a brain and become human.

I was ready to lambast you as bad as poet, til I saw who it was you were replying to.

I agree, that if a government unit negotiates and agrees to a contract with a union, they should not be able to go to the courts later and cry 'broke' in order to negate those benefits. The taxpayers should be on the hook for letting that gov unit be stupid.

Yes. Several companies have already moved to States that are more business-friendly, such as Texas. My concern is that more companies would pack up and leave if taxes were increased, making any tax hikes counter-productive. Have you ever heard of the Laffer Curve?

Cut spending across the board (shared sacrifice), bust the fascist teachers' unions, and reform the pension system. That would be a good start.
