Monica Conyers, the wife of the powerful chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., pleaded guilty to one count of bribery in a federal court in Detroit, this morning.

Prosecutors on Friday, June 26, 2009 charged Detroit City Council member Monica Conyers with accepting cash bribes in exchange for supporting a sludge contract with a Houston company.

According to court documents, in late 2007, Mrs. Conyers, president pro tem of the Detroit City Council, twice accepted envelopes filled with cash, once in the parking lot of a Detroit McDonalds.

This case focuses around dealings with Detroit businessman Rayford Jackson who pleaded guilty on Monday to giving $6,000 to a member of the Detroit City Council to help steer a wastewater treatment contract to Synagro Technologies.

Jackson was working as a consultant for Synagro which won the $1.2 Billion contract to remove sludge from the city's water treatment plants. The contract was awarded in 2007.

The criminal information noted that on Nov. 20, 2007 and Dec. 4, 2007 Mrs. Conyers received envelopes filled with cash from people associated with Jackson.

After initially opposing a sludge contract with Synagro, Mrs. Conyers, after accepting a bribe, became the deciding vote in the city council on a resolution to approve the contract.

Mrs. Conyers faces up to 5 year in prison, three years supervised release and/or a $250,000 fine. Calls to an attorney for Mrs. Conyers were not immediately returned.

Rep. Conyers should resign in shame. He can't even keep his own wife from breaking the law, how can he lead the House Judiciary Committee.

House Judiciary Committee is charged with overseeing the administration of justice within the federal courts, administrative agencies and Federal law enforcement entities. The Judiciary Committee is also the committee responsible for impeachments of federal officials.

John Conyers isn't responsible for what his wife does, and I'll refrain from judging him until there's any actual evidence of misconduct on his part.

She deserves what she gets, but does $6,000 for a $1.2 billion contract say anything about her smarts? Unless Conyers is involved or knew about it, he should not be punished. Knowing the amounts involved is a pretty good indication she acted on her own.

Anybody that would marry that has something wrong in his head and should not be in a position of power. But then again,you have to look at the people that voted her & him in office, just as stupid and ignorant.

They weren't stupid enough to vote for someone who'd mass-murder hunderds of thousands of innocent people for power .. and who also got tens of thousands of US soldiers killed and maimed, brought down the American economy, and almost single-handedly ended the American Century. I guarantee THEY .. as in NONE OF THEM .. voted for a motherfucker like that .. but I can also guarantee that YOU and your ignorant ass DID vote for such a motherfucker.

John Conyers is second the longest serving Member in the House and he has a resume that neither you or 12 of your grandpappy's could touch.
