Why is Ron DeSantis slipping in the polls?

Slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away You know the nearer your party's nomination The more you're slip slidin' away:laugh:

At this stage in the 2024 GOP presidential primary cycle, the fact that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) hasn't officially declared his candidacy for his party's nomination feels more like an administrative afterthought than a sign of genuine electoral reluctance.

With his reputation bolstered by a rare good showing during an otherwise disappointing GOP midterm election, DeSantis has spent the early part of 2023 crisscrossing the country with conspicuous stops in presidential primary hubs like Iowa and New Hampshire, hawking his "make America Florida" memoir, and weighing in on matters ostensibly outside the scope of someone content to stay in state government for long.

Despite his early reputation as a potential Trump-slayer — coupled with a number of encouraging, if largely premature, polls — the light from DeSantis' political star seems to be dimming.

A 'very bad week' for DeSantis supporters

Data analytics firm Morning Consult an updated 2024 GOP primary tracking poll taken over the weekend of March 17-19 that showed DeSantis tied with his record low. Meanwhile, Trump surged to more than double the Florida governor's support.

DeSantis' slippage comes amidst a particularly rocky stretch of headlines for the governor. He downgraded Ukraine's defense against an ongoing Russian invasion as not part of the "vital national interest" for the United States — a foray into international politics which earned him the surprisingly caustic ire of many of his fellow Republicans.

This foreign policy squabble was overtaken by rising questions over DeSantis' personal touch on the campaign trail, and his capacity for retail politics. That was followed by the most open warfare to date between DeSantis and Trump, whose allies blasted the governor as a "weasel" for raising Trump's alleged hush-money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels in a backhanded attempt to denounce the possibility of criminal indictments.

"It's the trend that's important, and the trend is unequivocal: Every single one of these polls has shown Mr. DeSantis faring worse than before, and Mr. Trump faring better," The New York Times'Nate Cohn concluded, while cautioning against trusting a single poll for electoral forecasting.

DeSantis cannot survive Trump. Period. He would be an absolute fool to run in 2024. Unfortunately for DeSantis, he is as long on ego as he is short in stature. Trump is going to destroy DeSantis and at the same time ensure the Dems will win the White House.

Thanks lil Ron Ron!!

The Republican party is made up of two kinds of people, those who are afraid of Trump and those who worship him.

Lyin' Ted Cruz and Little Marco Rubio are so afraid of being the subject of Trump's schoolyard taunts again they haven't made a peep about jumping into this race.

Ron is not ready to be president, if he runs what will he run on? Anti-trans, anti-crt, anti drag queen, and don't say gay?!! That moronic shit DeSantis has done in Florida will not work on a national scale?!! He already has two big voting blocks against him if he is the GOP nominee, Blacks and the LGBTQIA+ community?!!

Interesting observation and agreed.

A guy who hasn't even declared himself for the race is 'slipping' in the polls months before the first vote will be tallied and people are declaring the race now over and Trump's victory fait accompli?

One might think there are a lot of newcomers to politics who aren't aware that history is replete with early front runners not winning the nomination.

Notice it's mostly the Trumpers who shit on DeSantis. I prefer him over Trump but prefer Nikki over DeSantis.

After all, a guy who lets his wife dress him for public events can't be all bad, eh? LOL

I think the polls at the very least are taking the temperature of the electorate. Which is informative. DeSantis is clearly stumbling out of the blocks. And it's pretty obvious that he intends to run. Otherwise, why in the world would he care about Ukraine. I'm pretty sure that isn't anywhere on the Florida Governors agenda.

I’d say his fumbling the Ukraine situation, especially now since he is trying to reverse himself, showed he isn’t ready to take the main stage

The “Woke” and “Florida freedom” theme doesn’t seem resonate beyond the Florida State line

Because Trump made such an abomination of the office of the presidency, he has caused a couple of new negative dynamics for the Republican party, and it has affected the last 3 national elections and pushed them all in favor of Democrat wins.

AND THE FIRST IS the dynamic of REPUBLICANS who are now voting for democrats (Straight Ticket) in protest of DONALD TRUMP as the leader of their party.

Dynamic no. 2 are the Republicans referred to as the NEVER-TRUMPERS that still vote Republican in Congressional and local appointments, while voting for Biden or someone they wrote in place of TRUMP, in Presidential races.

These two dynamics alone has been enough to give the Democrats the edge in the last 3 elections.

Trump's answer to this, is create the idea in the minds of his CULT FOLLOWING that the Democrats are cheating in the elections, instead of reading the writing on the wall that he has been rejected by enough Republicans in his own party that he will never be able to ever win a presidential race again here in America.

Trump will never admit to himself or anyone else that he is a total failure, and now harmful to the Republican party that he DIVIDED HIMSELF.

And of course his TRUMPTARDED followers obviously think SUCCESS means- If at first you do not succeed- KEEP ON SUCKING UNTIL YOU DO!

But that is insanity. It's like the Trumptards and FOX NEWS have no concept of doing the simple math involved here.

So, to stay on point, DeSantis has only tried to speak to Trump's base, and has not distanced himself to Trump's hate policies that divided their party in the first place, and are not popular with the actual Vocal and Voting Majority of Americans.

The only way the Republicans will ever win another presidential race, IS THEY MUST WIN BACK ALL OF THE REPUBLICAN VOTES TRUMP HAS Bled over TO THE DEMOCRATS THAT ONCE HELPED THEM WIN IN 2016.

Trump stuck a dagger in the belly of the Republican party, and the bleeding won't stop until they select someone new to pull their image and dignity back up out of the sewer, and start endorsing policies that are popular with the VOCAL and VOTING MAJORITY of voters again- AND LEAVE ALL OF TRUMP'S LIES AND CONSPIRACY THEORIES BEHIND!

AIN'T NOBODY GOT NO TIME FOR THAT KIND OF SHIT ANYMORE!

And I would also like to personally thank FOX NEWS for pushing Trump's lies and conspiracy theories that has also guaranteed the Democrats overall gains in the last 3 elections. We could not have done it without your help!

YOU GO FOX NEWS!

To your bolded, now granted it's a small sample size, but do you read this board? (don't mean that in a snarky way but in a serious one)

Today's Trumppers like entertainment, and he is less entertaining and more into policy and that booring stuff.

Lots of people vote in this country who don't follow politics on a daily basis and for whom their lives don't revolve around every activity of the President, like people on this board. I'm not making a judgement about that but just stating it matter of factly. Therefore, those with the most name recognition (in this case Trump) benefit early.

Yes, we all know DeSantis will announce at some point that he is running. My point in bringing that up is the day he does it will make national news. That will catch the attention of people who don't really follow politics religiously.

History has shown us that polls this far out are not all that accurate in predicting the winner.

To me, the most telling part of this poll is the fact that DeSantis has taken a nosedive in just one month. Meaning many Republicans switched from DeSantis to Trump. I assume, those are people who are at least paying minimal attention, otherwise they wouldn't have changed their positions. I agree that you cannot extrapolate a winner from these polls, but you can see trends. Trump, without question, is the frontrunner for the GOP nomination. The party apparently hasn't learned a thing.

I preface my comments by saying I've been wrong before (unfortunately, many times) and I could be wrong now.

When you're polling this early you tend to get the voices of the more hardcore party supporters. You combine that with name recognition and that's why Trump's in the lead. We all know polls numbers ebb and flow and if DeSantis stumbled this week that could be reflected in this most recent polling. But I still take it with a large grain of salt because it's so early. Most people don't lead wire-to-wire in these races.

Yes, Trump has a core of supporters who will back him no matter what. But I read a couple of different places with many #MAGA supporters that are now all about DeSantis. They loved Trump but say his time has passed and he needs to step aside. These are the types that would still vote for him in a general (or any Republican) vs Biden but will not do so in the primary.

That's why I give little credence to this polling. I'll add this as well. Sometimes as an individual, organization or team you need someone from the outside to come in and offer an a non-biased analysis because those on the inside aren't able to do so. It can work the other way as well where people on the outside are too far removed from what's happening on the inside to really see under the tires. The latter is how I see liberals and Trump. Democrats have a vested interest in painting the Republican Party as beholden to Trump and wanting him as a candidate (that obviously didn't work in 2016 but did in 2020 and will work again in 2024 if he gets the nomination). Thus they miss the undercurrent of many former #MAGA people ready to move on. It may not show itself in polling today but it's there.

I was writing about Republicans in general. Obviously the Democrats and the "tolerant" Left dislike Ron almost as much as they dislike Trump himself.

MAGATs might eat up the bigotry and "war on woke" shit DeSantis spews, but their loyalty is, of course, to Der Gropingfuehrer.
