Why do we even trade with them?

I think we get like 25% of China's total export. we could dump china into a massive depression if we wanted. Its like a cold war they got the nukes and we got the nukes but neither is going to pull the trigger.

point is its a stale mate. wouldn't happen. China will continue to take our debt and mutter under there breath.

So you think that if we cut China's export business by 25% at least, and dump China into a massive depression, they would not cash in their holdings of US Treasury bonds, and instead, be willing to purchase more? ...And this comports with logic and reason, how?

We buy a lot of shit from China, that is precisely WHY they are enthusiastic about buying American debt. You see... for those of you who are too stupid to understand this without the coloring book... When a nation "assumes debt" for another nation, it is not just done on a handshake and your word... nope... such transactions are secured by "treasury bonds" which can be redeemed as long as the nation's currency is of any value. China has tons of these from us. They probably have underground warehouses to hold them. If and when, the United States decides to break off trade relations with China, you can bet your sweet ass these treasury bonds will be redeemed by China, and the value of the US dollar will plummet as a result.

This is the entire point I have been making throughout this discussion, we are TOO in debt to China, to take our toys and go home! We are not going to cancel trade relations, whether it "should be morally right" or not! It does not matter how we feel about the human rights issues in China, we can't afford to cancel trade relations with them. If we do, we'll pay a price for it, a huge price, one I don't think we are willing to, or able to pay. Would it make a difference if we took such a stand? Perhaps, but it just might make more sense to push for reform in China, to maybe have the chance to leverage them with trade, to bring them into the 21st century?

I refer back to the title of this thread... Why do we even trade with them?

Because to NOT trade with them, is something we can't afford to do. Regardless of how you personally feel about the human rights abuses in China, that is just a fact of the matter here. It is not "defending" these abuses or "supporting" this, to recognize what reality is. Whether it is "right" or not, is beside the point. I agreeeeeeee with you about the human rights issues, I want our government to put every pressure they can on the Chinese to reform, but I have to face the reality that we have established trade relations with them, and they hold a lot of US debt. No ACTION can be taken without consequence.... try to REASON that in your mind for a moment. You know this is true. So how could you expect us to cancel trade relations in this instance, without causing a consequence?

As you can clearly see, a person would have to be retarded on the level of usidiot or onzies to not be able to reason why we still trade with China.
