WHO SHOULD MAKE THE DECISIONS?

Are there any people here in JPP who think that parents, rather than legislative bodies, should be the determinant for setting the allowable age for recreational alcohol consumption...or for that matter, recreational drug use such as marijuana? Should a parent be able to give a youngster a certified note allowing the kid to be served at a bar? If so, perhaps you set out your reasoning for why you consider that to be appropriate. And if you oppose the notion, perhaps give an indication of why you oppose it.

I expect that I, and others, will link any reasoning/considerations in either direction...to the topic of whether parents or government should be the determining party for setting the allowable age for having gender affirming remedial steps taken for minors contemplating such moves.

And if you think the minors themselves should have the right to make those determination...mention that.

I've never come up with a good answer to this general question. Where do parental rights end and state laws begin? Where do INDIVIDUAL rights end and state laws begin? Why can the government threaten to extort money from me for not wearing a seat belt in MY car?

What kind of changed my views on the role of government was when Oregon rolled back it's law that decriminalized possession of small amounts of hard drugs like heroin, fentanyl, coke, etc in 2024, after a 4 year "experiment". They decriminalized possession in 2020 and said "Nope, that didn't work" in 2024 after seeing the impact.

What it comes down to is that there are a lot of irresponsible, dangerous adults that make really bad decisions. Many of them become parents and if the government didn't put some guardrails in place, the societal impact would likely be devastating.

OK to vote and sign contracts at eighteen, but not to have a glass of Chianti with your lasagna
or a beer while watching a game on a hot day at Fenway.

To me, this is absolutely insane regardless of whether the government OR the parents are responsible.

When you form a nation out of people who weren't cutting it where they were,
this is the kind of fucked up logic you can get.

It depends on the situation.

Where to go to school and what to wear - sure.

How to behave in front of company? Sure

Whether to get an operation? Subject to both the expertise of a medial professional and the parent (if the kid's still a minor)

Abortion, either voluntary or required to save the mom's life - Should be the woman's decision for voluntary and a qualified physician for the second kind.
