Where are Ukraine's refugees going?
Refugees are also crossing to neighbouring countries to the west, mostly Poland.
The UN says that as of 17 May, 6.3 million people have left Ukraine:
Poland has taken in 3,396,792 refugees
Romania 930,341
Russia 863,086
Hungary 615,256
Moldova 465,435
Slovakia 426,605
Belarus 27,308
Some people have travelled from Moldova into Romania and so are included in both countries' totals.
Poland, Hungary and Slovakia are part of the Schengen area, where there are no internal border controls.
This means many of those counted when they initially crossed into these countries may have since travelled to other places.
The Czech Republic said that as of 17 May, it had granted 346,770 emergency visas to Ukrainian refugees.
Germany said that as of 14 May, more than 700,000 Ukrainians had arrived in the country, 40% of whom were children.
Some Ukrainians have travelled to Russia from the pro-Russian breakaway regions of Luhansk and Donetsk in the east. Others have been evacuated to Russia from war-torn cities such as Mariupol.

Western war-mongers would rather not concede that a great many Ukrainians are pro-Russian . Of that number many want to become part of the Russian Federation. This catastrophe actually started as a Ukrainian civil war stoked by the CIA.
The Russians stated some time ago that over a million Ukrainian refugees had chosen to go to Russia. This is in addition to the millions of the pro-Russian inhabitants of the Donbas who have chosen to stay put now that NATO has forced Russia to recognize the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, the point being that Ukraine is never going to regain the territories whose populations see themselves as Russian- unless the Ukrainian neo-Nazis want to exterminate them- as they've been trying to do for the past eight years.
Ultimately, Ukraine will have been diminished and , at best, will become a Western passenger state requiring , it has been mooted, upwards of fifty billion dollars every month in Western hand-outs .
The rights of pro-Russian Ukrainians should have been recognized from the start and the CIA should never have initiated a coup against the pro-Russian elected government. Additionally, Russia's requests to have its security guaranteed should have been answered, not ignored.
In short, the whole shebang is one unnecessary and avoidable, NATO-initiated clusterfuck and the losers are, once again, us- the civilians and tax-payers.
