what will a truly close election mean for the winner

will the nation continue to feel divided and that the election was not won fair and square if we have a winner by a paper thin margin?

the gop has declared (to the loss of the nation) that their single most important thing is to deny obama a second term

the stalemate in dc has reached epic proportions and will likely continue regardless of who wins in november

what has happened to us

bummer

An interesting excerpt from your link.

(Excerpt) There’s another reason to fear an election clouded by uncertainty. Back in 2000, the Bush-Gore runoff took place in a time of unprecedented, seemingly permanent peace and prosperity. The Cold War was over, al-Qaida was a concern to a tiny handful of officials, unemployment and inflation were both negligible, real incomes for average Americans were rising and the big debate was what were we going to do with those trillions of dollars in surpluses. As one writer put it, “America was a hotbed of rest.” There seemed so little at stake that a catchphrase of the day labeled it “the Seinfeld Election--a contest about nothing.” (End)

That described the US after eight years of a Democratic Presidency (1992 – 2000) How would one describe the US after eight years of a Republican Presidency (2000 – 2008) ? If things can go from “peace and prosperity” to wars and near financial collapse does any sane individual want to take that chance again?

so this is 21st century Amrican governing, absolute gridlock built in. Obstructionism is the "out" party's absolute bottom line goal.
One would think a close election, and a divided government, would bring reasonable compromise. Guess not.

It's going to be close, Obama has nothing except the" lessor of 2 evils" -all he can do is bash Romney and the Repubs.
Funny how he can't even lead his own party, muchless force concensus on bills.

Romney is saying "trust me, i'm a businessman" except we don't know his business, he refuses to release anything but the most contemparary tax returns. He still hasn't come up with any ideas. While I disagree with much of Obma's worldview, at least he has one.

Wishing you all the best of luck; i'll be taking reduced SSA payments the next election (62), and a couple years more ( if it's still viable) on Medicade.

We did co-operate in the past, the best ex. is Reagan and Tip O'Neil -but those days are gone, as we lockstep in rigid partisian mindsets.

I'll be voting for the future, and Gary Johnson - in the hopes of seeding a 3rd party into the thick skulls that rigidly cling to their party line -right or wrong.
The best I can do, I wish you all luck, my parting advice? talk to each other and listen back instead of shouting over each other to drown out "the other side".
The big picture is we're Americans first, their isn't any other side - just compromise, and an ability for DC to function.
