Many Never-Trump Republicans and Democrats struggle to understand how the U.S. electorate seems so willing to return Republicans to power after they spread the “big lie” of a stolen election, fed an insurrection and still won’t acknowledge their nominee lost in 2020. For an explanation, they should look to how other previously democratic countries have fallen to autocracy.
As Milan W. Svolik wrote for Journal of Democracy in 2019, democracies are most vulnerable to strongmen who were initially elected, such as Hugo Chávez and his successor Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, Vladimir Putin in Russia, Viktor Orban in Hungary and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey. Svolik writes that in these situations, the autocrats’ tactics “rarely amount to an outright violation of core democratic principles.”
