Incompetence? Corruption? Corporatism? Surely there must be a reason.
Our military spending makes no sense. Consider.
The US spends (2019) 716 billion (this does not include "defense related" spending which brings us over a trillion bucks)
The EU spends 232 billion
Japan, Canada and Australia add another 82.1 billion
Add it up and it comes top a shade over a Trillion bucks
China spends 151 billion
Russia spends 47 billion
The US alone spends about 3 1/2 times the combined total of China and russia
The US and the EU combined spend spend almost 5 times the combined Russia China total
US, EU and the other three allies spend over 5 times the combined Russia China total.
What are we worried about? Why must more and more be spent. For the life of me I can only think of the three reasons at the top of this post.
In all our conflicts and alliances the US military is always engaged in "training" local forces. We trained the Vietnamese. We trained the Iraqis for more than a decade and the Afgans for 17 years. None of them seems to have become competent. One must ask the question, "Are the military as bad at training as the GOP is at investigating? With this seeming lack of success why do we continue? Can Russia and China be that much more efficient than are we?
I am forced to go back to the three reasons at the top of this post.
