A parent's email response to a sexual education program for fourth-graders led police and the Decorah School District to increase security Monday.
Superintendent Mike Haluska said the parent was unhappy they weren't notified about a human sexuality video and materials and felt they should have been notified in advance.
Haluska said the email the parent sent to the district used several phrases that could be interpreted as dangerous, including "declaring war on the Decorah School District."
As a result of the email, extra officers were put on patrol and outdoor activities at the elementary school were canceled. The parent was also served a no trespass order.
Tensions over the email and the extra security convinced many parents to leave their children at home Monday. The district said 26 percent of the student body wasn't in class.
The superintendent said elementary students are given a letter to take home to their parents about the class. Information is also in the elementary school's newsletter.
He said the materials are distributed by the Area Education Agency and the video students watch in class is produced by the Disney Co.
