We're really lacking in off-topic discussions, no?

Right now, our politics are the very worst attribute of American life.

Politics are more toxic than they've ever been in our nation's history,
and the most opinionated people during our Civil War
probably didn't seethingly hate each other the way
so many Americans clearly hate each other right now.

We have to talk about it, I suppose,
but denizens of this website probably have other interests
that they'd like to discuss with one another.

Yes, we have the usual human interest stuff that we talk about on the Owl tribute thread from time to time,
but no real, in depth threads discussing interests and hobbies that others here may share.

Still, I guess that if enough of us actually wanted that, we'd have it.
I guess that not many of us need or want that here, which is fine.
Maybe it's just not that type of forum site.

I'm just sharing an observation.

Why would you expect a forum site called, "Just Plain Politics" to be a chit chat site.

Most specific-interest fora on the web have off-topic departments to which their frequent visitors contribute.

I go to golf fora which have discussions about cars and photography and such.
I go to audiophile fora which have discussions about food and travel.

There is one interesting fact, though.

Most of these sites specifically discourage and usually even ban political discussion.
Perhaps that's why political fora talk about nothing else.

I suppose that makes sense.

You are on the wrong forum. You should go to a social media site.

I hate social media.
I only frequent forum-formatted sites in a variety of specific topics and subjects.

There are other such fora on which to discuss various topics.
I merely commented on how politics-oriented sites have less off-topic discussion
than sites primarily dedicated to other specific subjects.

If one frequents only politics-oriented fora,
one might not know.

I'm looking at an interesting volunteer opportunity for the National Archives to interpret and transcribe the pantheon of old historical documents they still have which are written in cursive.
They say knowledge of cursive writing will become basically extinct since it's no longer taught in schools, and they want to reach out to people who still know cursive writing and get their help with interpreting and transcribing the old documents.

I can read reasonably legible cursive, but I can't make out anything that I write in longhand myself.
My own signature on a check or contract looks like a random scribble,
but my printing isn't too bad for an old man with arthritic fingers.

It would be a shame if old documents written in the cursive format are lost forever---
especially if they're good recipes for ethnic dishes.

Being able to interpret cursive writing might be a skill one could get paid for someday
