well, the record is derived from proxy studies like tree ring density and ice cores, mud cores and just about anything else that can reveal variations that correlate to other known climate drivers. The problem is the trees stop correlating to temps so they had to pre-select trees that showed a climate signal so the sudden rise in CO2 could be said to match.
