Virginia flips 14 seats blue in biggest Democratic pick-up since 1899

Democrats scored an enormous moral victory and a blow to Donald Trump on Tuesday by electing Ralph Northam as the next governor of Virginia.But in addition to electing Northam, Democrats flipped 14 number of seats in the Virginia House of Delegates — the largest Democratic gain in a single election in the state

This victory triples the total number of Democratic state legislative pickups since Trump was elected, and reduces the GOP majority to just a few seats.Many of these individual races were themselves inspiring. There was Danica Roem, the transgender journalist who beat a virulently antigay GOP lawmaker. But Democrats did even more than win big on Tuesday. They broke a Republican gerrymandering scheme in Virginia that has been in force for nearly a decade.For years, Republicans in Virginia have controlled the House of Delegates because they were allowed to draw their own district lines after the last census. GOP lawmakers played with district boundaries to pack Democratic voters into a few small districts, while spreading Republican voters out across several, thus rigging the races to skew more GOP than the popular vote.Virginia is one of the most heavily such gerrymandered states, although Republicans have used this model to rig state legislatures nationwide. Some of these schemes were so blatantly illegal the Supreme Court struck them down, as in North Carolina.Now that Virginia has a Democratic governor, and the GOP House caucus has been severely weakened, it will be almost impossible for Republicans to get a gerrymandered legislative map through when it is due to be redrawn in 2021. They will have to draw the map fairly.Democrats’ stunning, inspirational victory in the House of Delegates is a signal that not only is Donald Trump on notice, the entire corrupt GOP machine is on notice with him. And with 2018 around the corner, Tuesday night is only the beginning.​

Even extreme gerrymandering did not save the Virginia GOP.

I suspect they are going to try for some sort of state level-equivalent of the electoral college next....allowing their shitty candidates to win in states where they lose the popular vote.

If I have learned anything about politics over my many years it is that voters in general aren’t very ideological. They ALWAYS want change and vote for it.

Parties are up and parties are down.

In 2004 Karl Rove famously said there was a reordering. He was wrong.

In 2012 democrats said Republicans would never win another’s Presidential election

People make big mistakes over reading election results because they want them to mean more than they do.

You have been strangely quiet about the Virginia election now you are preening about it like it has been your sole focus for weeks now

Northern Va. is a growing population. It's an extension of DC and Maryland politics,and lots of civil servants.
The vote is close, but the northern VA is simply more populous

So far, I'd give the spin an "A" for effort - like, really trying hard. But, unfortunately, a D+ for logic and actual content.

That and they have been waiting a year literally a year so they could boast about a political win. They have all this pent up angst they are dying to unleash

As I accurately predicted, these same people who didn’t start one thread about yesterday’s election prior to it taking place now all of a sudden think it is their path forward and it was their rapture.

Deep down they were scared to death about yesterday leading up to it because they feared Gillespie would win and they were trying to inoculate themselves. If Gillespie had own they would have claimed they never cared about it.

I didn’t realize how much you and I damaged poor Thingy’s fragile ego.

Now he will spend all his time typing the word “triggered” in response to anything I say.

He did that during the primary. He did that during the election too. Nothing has changed.

Here is the difference between you and me other than I am a thousand times smarter.

I can look at a situation as it is. You can only see things how you want them to be. You constantly lie to yourself to protect your beliefs from being challenged.

You will now convince yourself that any and every win by a democrat is proof the country hates Trump. You will convince yourself that yesterday is proof 2018 will be a blowout.

All I am saying is it is too early to predict anything.

You are getting orgasmic over elections democrats should have won. Now the House of Delegates swinging in VA is significant. Is it a response to Trump? Maybe, maybe not.

VA has been trending blue for a while due to the population growth of swamp critters that make their living off of gobblement. So it isn’t surprising to me that they vote for the party of big government.

As a practical matter I was surprised the VA GOP couldn’t do better than an establishment type like Gillespie who had lost his bid for Governor once before and isn’t even from VA
