US will open investigation into killing of Shireen Abu Akleh

The United States has informed Israel that it plans to investigate the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, the Palestinian-American Al Jazeera reporter who was killed during an IDF raid in the Jenin refugee camp in May this year.

Israel confirmed that the US Department of Justice has started an investigation into the killing.

In response, Defence Minister Benny Gantz said on Twitter that Israel "will not cooperate" with the US probe, calling it "a grave mistake".

"I made it clear to the American representatives that we stand behind the IDF soldiers, that we will not cooperate with any external investigation, and we will not allow interference in Israel's internal affairs," he said.

Seems like the investigation may have started before the elections. It was only confirmed as ongoing by Israeli on Monday. When it began is not reported.

The Hague, the Netherlands – Al Jazeera Media Network has submitted a formal request to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate and prosecute those responsible for killing veteran Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

Abu Akleh, a television correspondent with Al Jazeera for 25 years, was killed by Israeli forces on May 11 as she was covering an Israeli military raid on a refugee camp in Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.
