'US officials delayed flight to Iran with $400m on board until American prisoners had been released, report claims - raising fresh 'ransom' allegations
But it has now emerged that a cargo plane with the cash was held in Switzerland until Iran freed US detainees
++

The United States held a cargo plane carrying $400 million dollars in cash bound for Iran until several American detainees were released, raising fresh allegations that a ransom was paid for them.

Iran was only allowed to pick up the money from Switzerland after a Swiss Air Force plane carrying the detainees left Tehran on January 17, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials and others brief on the operation.

Earlier this month, the White House said it was returning cash from a 1970s Iranian military order that was not fulfilled because of the Islamic Revolution.

And President Barack Obama has strongly pushed back against criticism that the administration's payment amounted to ransom in exchange for the release of American prisoners :)

'(Secretary of State) John Kerry could meet with the (Iranian) foreign minister, which meant that our ability to clear accounts on a number of different issues at the same time converged. :)

it's amazing how Obama can simply outright lie about not paying a ransom

lie about it, deny it, drag it out, and then "why are we still talking about this" -Clinton uses the same template

Had to lie as its illegal
Not that he has any problems lying, it's his natural state
it's the modus operandi at least. I never really thought about it, but Clinton uses the same technique:

lie about it, deny it, drag it out, and then "why are we still talking about this"
albeit Obama throws in some fake righteous indignation to boot

How is it illegal to provide ransom to Iran? Was it illegal for Thomas Jefferson to pay ransom to the Barbary pirates?
we don't do it. it is illegal to transact any monies with Iran, hence the behind the scenes payout in cash.
It's a bad idea. US citizens are kidnapped allover the world, and our policy is not to pay ransom.
If you wanna change policy..

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest also rejected Iranian officials' claims that the cash payment was a ransom, saying: 'The United States under President Obama has not paid a ransom to secure the release of Americans unjustly detained in Iran and we're not going to pay a ransom.'

The president's spokesman acknowledged that the timing of the transfer was not coincidental - but he backed up the administration's claim that the deal to give Iran the money it was owed fell into place as a result of positive momentum from the Iran deal.

'This all came to a head at the same time because we are addressing and resolving longstanding concerns with Iranian behavior and the benefits are almost too long to mention,' he told reporters today.

Money paid to Iran was ‘leverage’ not ransom, State Department says

www.washingtonpost.com/world/nation...1040b7-8ea0-40bd-b7cd-8629dc16c036_story.html

State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters that negotiators had “deliberately leveraged” Iran’s desire to get its money from a decades-old arms deal to make sure the authorities there would not renege on freeing three Americans. They were flown out Jan. 16, the same day the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers was implemented.

“We felt it would be imprudent not to consider that some leverage in trying to make sure our Americans got out,” Kirby said, noting the deep mistrust between the countries.

Kirby’s remarks marked the first time the administration has acknowledged there was any degree of linkage between separate negotiations for the release of five Americans, including two who left Iran independently, and money paid to Iran in foreign currency piled onto pallets aboard an Iran Air cargo plane in Geneva.

Part of the Iran agreement was releasing their own cash back to them. US treaties override US law.

lol it's not a treaty ratified by the Senate, It's an international multi-lateral executive agreement.
Yes that would over-ride US law ( transactions) -but we don't pay ransom

What does it matter? Obama can do what he wants with impunity.

The media isn't even covering this event. And its HUGE. We haven't had a president money launder a ransom ever!

This is up there with Iran- Contra. And the media rather talk about Trump eating fried chicken.

Exactly. It's a policy matter and not a legality.

Paying ransom for political prisoners ensures more of the same. Jefferson paid ransom to Muslims [irony and some things never change alert lol] but we went on to kick their asses so we didn't need to worry about having to pay it again.
