Israeli envoy lashes Kyiv for backing UN panel call on ICJ to opine on ‘annexation’


Israel’s ambassador to Ukraine lambasted Kyiv on Friday for its support of a resolution by a United Nations committee that calls on the International Court of Justice to “urgently” weigh in on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Israeli “annexation.”

Ukraine was one of 98 countries that voted in favor of the resolution at the UN General Assembly Fourth Committee meeting in New York earlier Friday. Seventeen nations opposed the measure and 52 abstained. The committee, also called the Special Political and Decolonization panel, is one of six main committees of the UNGA.

The resolution, titled “Israeli practices and settlement activities affecting the rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs of the occupied territories,” requests that the Hague-based ICJ “render urgently an advisory opinion” on Israel’s “prolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of Palestinian territory,” and appears to ignore Jewish ties to the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism.

Israeli envoy Michael Brodsky took to Twitter to voice his criticism of Ukraine and said its “support of the UN resolution ‘Israeli Practices’, denying Jewish ties to Temple Mount and calling for ICJ advisory opinion is extremely disappointing.”

The countries that voted against the resolution included Israel, Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, several Pacific island nations and the United States.

Israel was supported by the US, small bits of NATO and some Pacific Islands soon to disappear beneath the waves.

Now you see how important it was that Palestine became a de facto sovereign state, despite the whining of AIPAC's Congressmen and Senators and the Jewish fascists themselves.

Israeli commentators have expressed fear that the ruling may strengthen demands to stop buying goods produced by West Bank settlements, and to boycott Israeli companies that have economic or commercial links with settlement activity.

Itamar Eichner, writing in Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, warned that if the court ruled against Israel's occupation of the West Bank, it would cause a “political headache for Tel Aviv”.

Eichner expects that Israel will not cooperate with the court’s ruling if it finds that Israeli presence in Palestinian territories constitutes a continuous occupation.

Elsewhere, Israeli researcher Eliav Lieblich wrote in Israel Hayom that the UN resolution represents a “severe blow to Israel’s narrative” in the West Bank since the 1967 occupation.

198 organizations call on ICC to investigate Israeli crimes against Palestinians

198 Palestinian and international organizations have called on the International Criminal Court to investigate Israeli crimes and for public condemnation, amid an increase in Israeli regime's killings and continuous aggression against Palestinians.

Addressing the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, and the President of the Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court, Silvia Fernandez de Gourmandi, the organizations submitted a memorandum calling for public condemnation of Israel's classification of Palestinian civil society organizations as "terrorism", and calling on the Israeli regime to reverse its decision.
