Ukraine counteroffensive makes headway in south, situation 'complicated' on eastern front

Ukraine advances across Russian lines in vital Zaporizhzhia region

Ukraine’s long awaited counteroffensive is gaining traction, according to Kyiv’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar, who said Monday that Ukraine had retaken eight villages in the last two weeks.

A Russian installed official first conceded that Ukrainian troops were advancing in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and confirmed the town of Piatykhatky had been retaken by Ukrainian forces despite heavy fire from Russian troops.

"The enemy's 'wave-like' offensives yielded results, despite enormous losses," Vladimir Rogov, a Russian official positioned in Zaporizhzhia, said on Telegram Sunday.

But according to Maliar, Ukrainian troops had not only retaken the settlement, but had advanced nearly 4.5 miles into Russian lines over the last two weeks and "liberated" an area the size of nearly 44 square miles.

Another seven towns were also retaken by Ukrainian troops, including two in the Zaporizhzhia region and four towns to the east just over the border in the Donetsk region.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday warned that despite the advances, the area in Zaporizhzhia – which he referred to as the Tavria sector – remains "the toughest" front in the war.

I think we all understand you could never be counted on to defend your country against invaders, because seeing other people do it is unfathomable to you.
 
Ukranians are losing huge numbers of troops and equipment that they can’t replace just to gain a little ground that the Russians can take back whenever they want

Right now Russia is just bleeding their supplies

There is no way Ukraine wins a war of attrition

Russia is now getting plenty of attack drones from Iran. Further, they have learned how to jam the small drones that Ukraine had been using with great success.

It's getting worse in Ukraine. Not better.

Russia is now able to fire dozens of missiles every day in order to force Ukraine to waste all of its defense ammunition. Western allies have all but depleted stocks of defense weaponry. Russia is suffering massive losses, but they have the time and weaponry to do this for years.

The world wasted more than a year clutching its pearls, and now it's too late to hope for anything to be left in Ukraine.
 
The Russians are firing on all cylinders as Ukraine as a nation is near collapse....this has become a turkey shoot.

Ukraine lost five million people in WW2, and kept fighting to expel the invaders.

This war has made me realize how soft conservatives are, and how all the decades of them stroking their gun barrels and hollering about fighting for freedom was just false bravado.

Their drones are a lot better than ours are, that is the important thing. The Ukrainians dont think much of Western tanks, strykers and troop carriers either...they are too complicated, too prone to breakdown, and too heavy.

I wrote months ago to not unde estimate the Russians, and their ability to learn from mistakes and adapt.

But I make no predictions about the outcome of this counteroffensive, since the fog of war is too thick, and I am not a qualified military tactician.

Then sit down, there are quite a few of us who do better than you do.
 
Westerners who assume that the Russians are lying their asses off because that is what their leaders do routinely are in for a shock when/if they finally wise up.

It’s simple numbers

Russia hasn’t even used a tenth of their military assets in Ukraine yet while Ukraine has everything deployed

The only reason Russia hasn’t stormed in there is because they don’t want the west freaking out and rushing in there to defend Ukraine

Putin doesn’t care if this takes years because he knows he will win in the end

Russia is fighting a war of attrition and Ukraine simply cannot match them

Once aid dries up this will be over with quickly

Unless the West is willing to deploy its own soldiers soon it will be over, the Ukrainians are almost out of trained soldiers. It is worth noting that the 30,000 or so (the West has ben very not forthcoming on numbers) who got a couple of months of training in the West got trained in Western tactics to various standards in various counties, which proved to be a disaster. Western tactics are complicated and require close integration, none of which can be learned in two months, and Ukraine never had the correct force structure to carry it out. Ukraine has already given up Western tactics, attempting that which they can not do got a lot of Ukrainians dead.
 
There is no way this ends without Ukraine being sure that they were betrayed by the West, opening up the road for China's victory.

We discussed this a year ago. We agreed to revisit it. You felt (perhaps properly) that by attacking on Russian soil, Ukraine loses the war of appearances.

I disagreed. I didn't believe that Putin would use nukes, and like trump...he needed to be challenged.

Now Ukraine is in shambles, Russia has plenty of Iranian weapons, and the Western world has wasted most of its ammunition blowning thousands of missiles out of the sky. Russia has plenty of oil money to purchase more weaponry, and they're getting better at using the weapons that they have.

I believe Ukraine is still much better are fighting, but they are now suffering the same issues that Russia did w/respect to young men fleeing the country to avoid the war.

Russia will continue to force Ukraine to waste valuable resources chasing missiles aimed at Kiev.

You seem to think Ukraine was a nice place

It wasn’t

The corruption there was insane, the government supported the drug trade, human trafficking, gun smuggling and all sorts of things

Ukraine was basically the gateway to the west for illegal commerce

So if America is invaded in the future by Red China, you have a threshold of damage you think we should sustain before you jump out of your foxhole with the white flag of surrender.

You aren't even willing to take the body blow Ukrainians have taken, so presumably as soon as the Chinese inflict ~100k casualties on us, you would submit and surrender to Red China.
