United Auto Workers President Bob King instructed union locals representing Ford Motor Co. plants to hold their rank-and-file "strike authorization" vote by Sept. 2, intensifying pressure on the auto maker to reach a new labor deal before its existing contract expires.

The call for the vote, a standard negotiating practice, was outlined Tuesday when Mr. King addressed about 150 union officials in Chicago, ...

Do they really believe that if they vote to strike that some of those 9.6% of the US who are desperate to find work might just scab away their jobs. If they want to be secure they need the company to lock them out rather than strike. Right now, would be one of the worst times to strike, IMO. But heck... Maybe they know what they are doing.

Union leadership at its finest.... 'hey union members.... see that edge over there? Let's all jump off and see how well that works for us. Don't worry if you don't make it.... we can always try recruiting new union members to take your place and keep paying us to bribe Democrats.... TRUST US! We know what is best for you and we promise to look out for our (I mean your) best interest.'

They aren't voting to strike. They are voting on an authorization to strike. There's a big difference. It's a basic bargaining move that empowers the people negotiating on the union's behalf to call a strike if the negotiations are not fruitful.

Last month, Ford reopened an assembly plant in Cuautitlan to build 2011 Fiesta cars. The factory will generate 2,000 jobs and is part of $3 billion in investments announced since 2008. In the U.S., Ford has closed four assembly plants since 2006 and plans to close four more facilities by the end of 2011.

Maybe auto manufacturers aren't moving out of the country fast enough.....and this little push will help them.

what is this the Iraq war declaration where voting to authorize is not striking.

these dumbass are betting the 9.6% unemployed are too stupid to screw shit together for $70,000 and benefits

Pretty much the same concept. Basically, the rank and file put the decision to strike in the hands of the negotiating committee, much like Congress put the decision to invade in the hands of the President.

They're actually just betting that a negotiating committee with the authority to call a strike has more leverage than a negotiation committee that does not have the authority to call a strike.

Almost.....this gives the union the right to call a strike when they see fit without going back to the members for another vote....

You are right, the CWA authorized one but didn't strike. Just an authorization doesn't mean that they will, but it does give away the option for the membership. Nor does just saying "they aren't going to" make it so they won't. Verizon went on strike when I know that there are a large number of laid off phone company employees that can easily take up that work. I think it is a foolish time to strike or to threaten it. If I were the company management I would push that negotiation they are arguing from a position of strength due to the economic situation.

wow you guys really think I'm dumb.
We need a Reagan like slam on the air traffic controllers to happen and maybe detroit can come back.
