U.S. Officials: Putin Personally Involved in U.S. Election Hack

Two senior officials with direct access to the information say new intelligence shows that Putin personally directed how hacked material from Democrats was leaked and otherwise used. The intelligence came from diplomatic sources and spies working for U.S. allies, the officials said.Putin's objectives were multifaceted, a high-level intelligence source told NBC News. What began as a "vendetta" against Hillary Clinton morphed into an effort to show corruption in American politics and to "split off key American allies by creating the image that [other countries] couldn't depend on the U.S. to be a credible global leader anymore," the official said.

Ultimately, the CIA has assessed, the Russian government wanted to elect Donald Trump. The FBI and other agencies don't fully endorse that view, but few officials would dispute that the Russian operation was intended to harm Clinton's candidacy by leaking embarrassing emails about Democrats.

The latest intelligence said to show Putin's involvement goes much further than the information the U.S. was relying on in October, when all 17 intelligence agencies signed onto a statement attributing the Democratic National Committee hack to Russia.

The statement said officials believed that "only Russia's senior-most officials could have authorized these activities." That was an intelligence judgment based on an understanding of the Russian system of government, which Putin controls with absolute authority. Now the U.S has solid information tying Putin to the operation, the intelligence officials say. Their use of the term "high confidence" implies that the intelligence is nearly incontrovertible.

"He has had a vendetta against Hillary Clinton, that has been known for a long time because of what she said about his elections back in the parliamentary elections of 2011. He wants to discredit American democracy and make us weaker in terms of leading the liberal democratic order. And most certainly he likes President-elect Trump's views on Russia," McFaul added. Clinton cast doubt on the integrity of Russia's elections.

This just screams out "the '80's called and wants their foreign policy back." Was reading an old thread on this board last night from that debate and several liberals in the point cheering for Obama ripping Romney with that line. Irony is ironic isn't it?

I don't understand what you're saying. Doesn't it matter that a foreign leader meddled to this degree in our political system, to the point of swaying an election?

Totally agree. The "other side" doesn't get it. They will, in the long run, when it effects them. Their boy won, as of now. It's getting interesting by the day.

Serious question for you. What are you more upset about: the fact that your people got caught saying stupid shit or the fact they said those things in what amounts to a public forum?

It's getting too big to ignore or make fun of. Some people are going to be in for a rude awakening, and soon.

Sure it bothers me if another country messes with our election. I also think Putin's a sh*thead and have always felt that way. I think Obama's handling of him was weak and now Putin gives the ultimate F U to Obama.

That may all be true... I don't believe Obama handled him much differently than bush did. But I do believe guys like Putin and trump who play up their machismo would be very critical and vindictive about Hillary's comments.

It's hard to be sympathetic about the hacking because it basically brought to light how utterly corrupt Hillary and the DNC were.

What propaganda?

It's naive to think only the DNC was hacked. Let trump wrong-foot it and watch what happens.

Propaganda like fake news, for one thing. Like Mike Flynn spreading lies that Hillary was involved in a sex and money-laundering ring.

Hmmmm. Let's see. Talk about stupid shit:

1. Busgate. Trump, in his words, grabbing pussies. Yep, your boy saying stupid shit. Sort of got caught, didn't he? Public forum? Sure was. Should I go on. His bankruptcies. Yep. Created a lot of public interest. And he's a fantastic business man. Wow! How many bankruptcies did he file. Nice. Fake Trump University. Another way to line his pockets. You have to admit your boy has quiet the presidential background. Some leader.

Exactly.

There was a time when Republicans stood up for America and democracy.

But, since McConnell and Boehner declared their intent to make the US president fail as their number one priority, it seems they've lost all notion of patriotism.

Actually they didn't declare that.

Why does this offend you ken? Did you not approve of Obama saying it at the time?

What does this have to do with me? Or you? Did the Russians hack the Billy Bush archives?

I asked you a simple question, what bothers you more? You not going to go into that? I don't blame you. Trump may be a boor but as far as I can tell the only people who screwed with the democratic process were the DNC.
