U.S. Capitol riot probe turns focus to Trump allies and extremist groups

WASHINGTON, July 12 (Reuters) - Congressional investigators into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday will seek to draw connections between then-President Donald Trump's associates and right-wing militants who stormed the seat of government.

The House of Representatives committee's seventh hearing in five weeks will focus on the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, two pro-Trump groups that investigators say helped plan the attack, as well as QAnon, a right-wing conspiracy theory movement.

Jan. 6 hearing expected to focus on link between militants, White House

A committee aide said on a conference call with reporters Monday that the hearing will lay out the way that far-right militant groups such as the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and others took cues from Trump and his allies. Particular attention will be paid to his Dec. 19, 2020, posting on Twitter: “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th,” Trump tweeted. “Be there, will be wild!”
