US businesses brace for Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China to drive up costs

WASHINGTON (AP) — From an ice cream parlor in California to a medical supply business in North Carolina to a T-shirt vendor outside Detroit, U.S. businesses are bracing to take a hit from the taxes President Donald Trump imposed Saturday on imports from Canada, Mexico and China — America’s three biggest trading partners.

The levies of 25% on Canadian and Mexican and 10% on Chinese goods will take effect Tuesday. Canadian energy, including oil, natural gas and electricity, will be taxed at a lower 10% rate.

Mexico’s president immediately ordered retaliatory tariffs and Canada’s prime minister said the country would put matching 25% tariffs on up to $155 billion in U.S. imports.

The Budget Lab at Yale University estimates Trump’s tariffs would cost the average American household $1,000 to $1,200 in annual purchasing power.

Gregory Daco, chief economist at the tax and consulting firm EY, calculates the tariffs would increase inflation, which was running at a 2.9% annual rate in December, by 0.4 percentage points this year. Daco also projects the U.S. economy, which grew 2.8% last year, would fall by 1.5% this year and 2.1% in 2026 “as higher import costs dampen consumer spending and business investment.’’

The Penny Ice Creamery in Santa Cruz, California, has had to hike prices of its ice cream, including popular flavors “strawberry pink peppercorn’’ and “chocolate caramel sea salt,’’ repeatedly in recent years as an inflationary surge increased the cost of its supplies.

“I feel bad about always having to raise prices,’’ co-owner Zach Davis said. “We were looking forward to inflation coming down, the economy stabilizing in 2025 ... Now with the tariffs, we may be back at it again.’’

Trump has to stop messing around if your going to crash our economy using Tariffs do it right, put a MIN. 25% tariff on ALL imports, a 50% on China , Canada, Mexico ,and he is talking 100% on the EU countries, NOW that is how you do it.

I don't get why he treated communist China better and with more restraint than our closest ally to the north.

I was just reading some top economists are saying it could be a lot higher. some said 2600 to 2800 dollars a year if not higher.
In fact I saw some saying the other day it could go as high as 6800 a year , it depended on the tariffs Mexico, Canada, and China put on

He has got to keep the price of the JUNK he and his family sell that is made in China,
We all know how much he loves money.
I've always thought that limited, targeted tariffs were a legitimate tool at our disposal to retaliate for illegal trade practices. But it's amazing that one man in our democratic republic has the power to singlehandedly start a full blown trade war with our allies.

War with China would be pure insanity.....I currently think that the Imperial Empire Brain Trust can see that this son of a bitch is going down, and are trying to do the best they can to keep the America's and Europe attached to America even as the Empire collapses.

But Brian might be right, these fucks in Washington have no idea what they are doing generally.

A good reminder that some people are even more pessimistic than I am.

Key word in your post is " limited " Trump is not limiting anything. These tariffs are too high to do us any good and will cost the US consumer a lot of money.

Our standard of living will continue its collapse, there is no doubt about that.

My nephew put in a large order from China and Canada. They both produce the material he needs for his business. He did so as soon as Trump was sworn in, he knew what was coming.

Thank you for reminding me how simple it is to understand the motivations of a simple man!
It really is quite simple. You handle Felonious like a teenager. He stop growing emotionally when his mother rejected him and sent him to military school. She thought he was a horrible human being. She stated so several times. Being rejected by your mother causes a lot of scars, like being emotionally unavailable. It’s why he’s swayed by flattery. He wants you to love him, because he was rejected by his mother, the problem, he won’t love you back, he’ll just use you.
