Modupe Idowu, 59 and Esther Jubril Badmos, 48, were arrested after becoming embroiled in a dispute at a shoe shop in the city of Guangzhou
They were locked up in 'hell-like' conditions at a detention centre for 38 days
Pair have been released but can't return home to London because their visas have run out and Chinese authorities won't issue them new ones

I've spent a considerable amount of time in mainland China. Lovely folks, never had a problem.

If I had to guess, I imagine these beauties from the UK made the mistake of treating Chinese shopkeepers in China the same way they treat immigrant Chinese shopkeepers in the UK: miserably, rudely, and expecting them to docilely eat up whatever crap they toss at them.

To their surprise, that doesn't fly at all China.

The "row" in question isn't described at all, therefore I'm sure there's a lot more to this question than meets the eye.

So that justifies, according to an old China hand like you, their being thrown into a hellhole for 39 days without any charge?

Hey, when I go there I'm smart enough to realize that I'm in a country wherein I have no rights whatsoever. I don't consider myself visiting royalty and expect special rights that the resident Chinese do not have.

All it takes to get along in China is to act with the same civility with which you act at home...

Which is apparently what these ladies did.

As this article says, there is no racism in China because there are no blacks.

You do understand that nations that are largely homogenous racially will have little problems with racism. Right? Like Japan?

As a white man in China, I found them to extend themselves to me. "Face" remains quite important in their society. Also, you will find quite a few students and businessmen from Africa there as well, almost as numerous as Caucasians. In speaking with them the only problem they encountered was the same one I encountered; Chinese society does not consider it rude to stare. heh.

Listen thanks for the lecture but I know about Asia and 'face'. I worked in Thailand in the '80s, my wife is Thai and I have two sons, the eldest of which has a Vietnamese girlfriend. I have extensively travelled to Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam as well. In fact I am off to Thailand at the end of the month.

I didn't mean to lecture. I was just wondering where you pulled this racism allegation from?

Thank you for the intelligent insight .. which corresponds to much of what I've heard from others who have visited and lived there .. including African-Americans.

You should know that Aoxomoxao doesn't care about racism or women .. he's simply trying to cast negativity on China from wherever he can find it.

For the record...

The reason I spent so much time in China is because my now ex-wife was from Tianjin.

Suggesting you know about China because you're married to a Thai, and have been to Vietnam and Malaysia, also suggests that you consider all asians to be alike.

Which would make you.... what?

A racist.

No, but it makes you ignorant as there are many ethnic Chinese in Thailand and Vietnam, indeed my son's girlfriend family is of Chinese origin. The concept of face is fairly universal throughout Asia.
