Twitter is planning to start charging $20 per month for verification

Now that he owns Twitter, Elon Musk has given employees their first ultimatum: Meet his deadline to introduce paid verification on Twitter or pack up and leave.

The directive is to change Twitter Blue, the company’s optional, $4.99 a month subscription that unlocks additional features, into a more expensive subscription that also verifies users, according to people familiar with the matter and internal correspondence seen by The Verge. Twitter is planning to charge $19.99 for the new Twitter Blue subscription, though that price is subject to change. Employees working on the project were told on Sunday that they need to meet a deadline of November 7th to launch the feature or they will be fired.

Musk has been clear in the months leading up to his acquisition that he wanted to revamp how Twitter verifies accounts and handles bots. He is also keen on growing subscriptions to become half of the company’s overall revenue. On Sunday, he tweeted: “The whole verification process is being revamped right now.”

Platformer’s Casey Newton first reported that Twitter was considering charging for verification. A spokesperson for Twitter didn’t respond to a request for comment by press time.

LOL. Sure that'll work.

A subscription for blue checkmarks? Yea it will. People derive a lot of value from that. Not doing this before was leaving money on the table..

The Republicans' accounts are run by paid trolls. So with the verification, they'll stop that.

Before HURR DURR Democrats do the same, yes I know.

Not sure why this is getting spun as a left/right thing. The biggest question I have is will this cut down on the bots? I sure hope so.

If you're a sports reporter let's say, your goal is to have as many followers as possible. Are you not going to post on Twitter now because you have to pay a verification fee? I wouldn't think so. Are you going to move to a much smaller (new) platform? I wouldn't think so.

It's all about the eye balls to promote your name/brand. You are going to go where the most people are and that's Twitter.

Just 8 years ago the most eyeballs were on Facebook. Before that the most eyeballs were on MySpace. Before that the most eyeballs were on AOL.
Eyeballs don't stay on platforms that are no longer viable.

It is being reported that Twitter now has a debt service of $1 billion a year and only had revenue of $650 million last year which says it might not last 3 years before going bankrupt unless Musk is going to be selling a lot of Tesla stock to prop up Twitter.

Twitter is headed for the SHITTER!

It started with Donald Trump leaving his shit stains there, and now with Musk's fascination with Trump's SHIT STAINS!

You people that use twitter need to go and get a real life!

There is zero question that nothing is static. Like you said, a company can be on top today and gone tomorrow.

Twitter, to me, is a f'ing cess pool. I have an account, although I don't tweet, because there are certain people I want to follow. But when you read comments etc. there are so many bots and trolls it's mind boggling. I hope Musk, or anyone, can clean that sh*t up. If charging for people to be verified helps then I'm all for it. (I haven't really followed their business model and how this potential revenue would play a role.)

But this idea that Twitter is going to be deemed right-wing and someone is going to create a new left-wing version seems kind of asinine to me. As if everything is so easily broken down along those lines.

Can you tell us something Donald Trump and his TRUMTARDS has not politicized?

Get real!

It is going to cut down a lot of Republicans' tweets.

I understand you and how you feel. But the irony is that it would eliminate most of the Republican politicians' accounts.
