President Trump is facing pushback from his own supporters after defending his administration’s handling of the so-called Epstein files and downplaying their concerns about the investigation.
Last week, a two-page memo from the Justice Department and FBI concluded that there’s no evidence that the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein blackmailed powerful people or maintained a “client list.” The memo also reiterated that Epstein died by suicide in his prison cell in 2019.

Despite these conclusions, Epstein’s imprisonment and death have fueled countless conspiracy theories. Some right-wing figures — now serving in the Trump administration — have suggested that his death proves shadowy forces in the government were trying to undermine Trump.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, three top officials involved in the case, have clashed over how it was handled, especially as Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists openly questioned the official narrative.
Bondi drew criticism earlier this year after saying in an interview that Epstein’s client list was “sitting on my desk right now to review.” Around the same time, she handed binders labeled “The Epstein Files: Phase 1” to right-wing influencers — documents that were mostly redacted and already public.
Patel and Bongino, longtime critics of their own agency, also faced threats from far-right conservatives after a joint Fox News interview in May in which they confirmed that Epstein’s death was a suicide.
Over the weekend, Trump took to Truth Social with a lengthy post defending Bondi and urging supporters to “not waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about.” He also suggested, without evidence, that Democrats had created the files to target him politically.
“What’s going on with my ‘boys’ and, in some cases, ‘gals?’ They’re all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! We’re on one Team, MAGA, and I don’t like what’s happening,” Trump wrote.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump again praised Bondi, emphasizing the need for transparency in the Epstein investigation.
“But I think the attorney general, the credibility is very important. And you want credible evidence for something like that. And I think the attorney general’s handled it very well,” he said.
Still, Trump’s attempt to move past Epstein clashes with a key MAGA belief: that his return to the White House would expose a “deep state” protecting criminals, pedophiles, and other unsavory figures.
Trump has leaned on the “deep state” narrative for years, energizing supporters who believe the federal government, Democrats, and even some Republicans are working against him. Promises to “demolish the deep state” and answers to questions about the Epstein files have been recurring themes in his campaign speeches.
In a September 2024 podcast interview with Lex Fridman, Trump addressed concerns about a list of Epstein’s alleged “clients” that had never been made public.
“It’s very interesting, isn’t it? It probably will be [made public], by the way, probably,” Trump said, adding, “I’d have no problem with it.”
Earlier, in June 2024, Trump told Fox & Friends host Rachel Campos-Duffy that he might declassify the files — but cautioned against doing so if the contents were misleading. He also said he found Epstein’s death “interesting to find out” about, despite prior FBI reviews confirming suicide.
The memo and Trump’s defense of Bondi have sparked swift backlash from his supporters, some of whom feel betrayed. At Turning Point USA’s Student Action Summit in Florida, speakers including Tucker Carlson criticized the Justice Department memo.
“The fact that the U.S. government, the one I voted for, refused to take my question seriously and instead said, ‘Case closed. Shut up, conspiracy theorist,’ was too much for me,” Carlson said, without directly criticizing Trump.
Conservative podcaster Brandon Tatum echoed the skepticism, telling the TPUSA crowd:
“I think that guy was involved in something nefarious that implicates a whole lot of people. And my guess is that a whole lot of people may happen to be some of our allies and some people we don’t want to have a bad relationship with.”
Even outside of Trump’s base, critics are piling on. On a recent episode of his Flagrant podcast, comedian Andrew Schulz sarcastically suggested those with questions about Epstein were “stupid.”
“It’s insulting our intelligence,” Schulz said, donning a tinfoil hat alongside co-hosts. “Obviously, the intelligence community is trying to cover it up. Obviously, the Trump administration is trying to cover up. Something changed because they ran on this idea of exposing it.”
Democrats are seizing the opportunity to attack Trump, pointing to his past associations with Epstein and a jury finding him liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll.
“Did anyone really think the sexual predator president who used to party with Jeffrey Epstein was going to release the Epstein files?” Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia said at a campaign event. Some House Democrats are even considering a resolution to demand the release of all Epstein-related files.

Still, others within conservative circles are moving on. Charlie Kirk, reflecting on the Turning Point event, said he trusted the administration to handle the matter.
“Honestly, I’m done talking about Epstein for the time being,” Kirk said. “I’m gonna trust my friends in the administration. I’m gonna trust my friends in the government to do what needs to be done, solve it — ball’s in their hands.” according to npr.
