Unemployment claims fall to lowest level in 43 years, despite hurricanes:


The total number of laid-off workers receiving unemployment benefits fell to 1.89 million at the end of September, the Department of Labor reported Thursday, the lowest such mark in nearly 44 years.

And new claims for unemployment benefits dropped 15,000 to 243,000 in the first full week of October, according to the agency, as the job market bounces back from hurricane damage even faster than forecasters expected.

Prior to the landfall of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, claims had been running at ultra-low rates. With Texas and Florida now recovering, new claims again appear to be sinking to levels that indicate robust job creation. First-time claims in the states most affected by the storms are still high, but have fallen in recent weeks.

Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist, calculates that new claims below the 300,000 mark indicates that unemployment will remain stable or fall.

An American woman and her family freed from the custody of a Taliban-linked group left Pakistan Friday, officials said.

Caitlan Coleman, who is originally from Pennsylvania, and Canadian Joshua Boyle were kidnapped by militants while hiking in Afghanistan in late 2012. Coleman was pregnant when she was captured, and the couple had three children while being held hostage.

The military said that after it was alerted by U.S. intelligence that the family was being moved across the border from Afghanistan, a team that included infantry and intelligence personnel raced to surround the vehicle.

"It's a blessing that those children have survived and they're young enough that they can live a normal life," Boyle's aunt, Kelli O'Brien, told Canadian broadcaster Global TV. "It was my sister who called me and let me know that they’ve been saved and they’re coming home after five years — that it was really happening this time, that they had been saved."

FBI Director Chris Wray said "we could not be happier" about the outcome. "It's a great day. They've been held a long time," he said.

The couple had pleaded for their release in propaganda videos released by their captors. In one released in December, Coleman referred to "the Kafkaesque nightmare in which we find ourselves" and urged "governments on both sides" to reach a deal for their freedom. She then adds: "My children have seen their mother defiled."

"No prisoner exchange or ransom money" was involved in freeing Coleman, Boyle and their children.

After the couple was freed, President Donald Trump called the operation "a positive moment".

Vice President Mike Pence cast his vote in the Senate to help repeal a banking rule drafted under the Obama administration


Pence issued the deciding vote, siding with Republican lawmakers to break a 50-50 tie on Capitol Hill.

The move nullifies the pending arbitration rule, which aimed to prevent financial firms from banning customers from joining class action lawsuits.

Recent analysis from the Treasury Department found attorneys stood to benefit more than consumers from the rule.

President Trump is expected to sign the repeal.

What the Trump dossier says — and what it doesn’t



The dossier is composed of 17 “company intelligence reports,” each assigned a number between 80 and 135 and most of which include the date the report was completed — although the numeric order doesn’t always match the calendar order.

Note that we can’t verify that the reports actually were from those dates. This is important because the reports do sometimes make claims that were proven to be accurate by later reporting — but we don’t know that they weren’t written after those reports and dated prior.

We do know that in late October of last year, Mother Jones’s David Corn reported having seen the dossier and its contents. BuzzFeed published the version we reviewed in early January. Any reports after that point were clearly after the fact.

It’s also worth noting that the information included in the reports is mostly unverified “humint” — intelligence gathered by talking to people.

As Wired noted shortly after the dossier was published, such intelligence will usually be flagged with indicators suggesting how credible the sources and claims should be considered. The dossier lacks that.

The Steele dossier makes a wide range of claims, many of which are rumors that couldn’t be independently verified. Many other claims involve things that would have been publicly known at the time the report was apparently drafted. Although it’s impossible to say that the dossier is entirely inaccurate (there are some glimmers of accurate predictions), it is also impossible to say that it has been broadly validated.
