Not a fan of this. Legal immigrants start businesses at a higher rate than native born Americans do. There are too many people to count who have done amazing things in this country who are children of immigrants (and yes I know we are all children of immigrants). This will hurt economic growth.

Trump To Unveil Legislation Limiting Legal Immigration

President Trump is set to unveil controversial legislation Wednesday that would sharply curtail legal immigration to the United States, according to a White House official.

The president is meeting at the White House with two Republican senators pushing the legislation, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia.

One of President Trump's campaign promises was to reduce immigration, illegal and legal. The Cotton-Perdue legislation would cut by half the number of legal immigrants accepted into the U.S. each year.

As NPR's John Burnett reported,

"Their bill would do three things: First, limit the number of foreign nationals who are able to get green cards to reunite with their families already in the U.S. — currently the largest category of legal immigrants; second, cut the number of refugees in half; third, eliminate the diversity visa lottery — a program that gives visas to countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.

"Cotton says the number of green cards awarded each year — about a million — is excessive.

" 'In one year, this would reduce it to around 600,000,' Cotton says. 'Over the span of the 10-year window it would fall to about 500,000.' "

A White House official, speaking on background says the current immigration system "is outdated, and doesn't meet the diverse needs of our economy," and that the legislation being unveiled Wednesday "is aimed at creating a skills-based immigration system that will make America more competitive, raise wages for American workers, and create jobs."

Limiting legal immigration is opposed by business groups, which rely on low-skilled workers for agriculture and other jobs. And economists point to the low unemployment rate, 4.4 percent last month, as evidence that there are relatively few Americans who are without jobs now, and that, as Baby Boomers retire, there will be a labor shortage.

But backers of stricter immigration limits say allowing unskilled people into the country acts to keep wages low, especially for workers with just a high-school degree.

It's not clear how much support there is in the Senate, however, for such a bill. Republicans, such as Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and John McCain of Arizona are likely opponents, and there's little enthusiasm among Democrats.

Still, on the heels of last week's collapse of efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, President Trump is looking for a legislative victory, and with strong support inside the White House from advisers Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller, there is sure to be a strong push for the measure in the weeks and months ahead

not gonna happen. It depends on Republicans doing something for a change

Aunt Barry used reverse vetting in deciding who to let in. He WANTED immigrants to be unskilled since they would go on welfare and vote for his party.

Great again! We don't need anymore gubmint dependent, dregs of society on our wallets' dole. If you got nothing to offer, stay where you are......

This will only encourage the sorts of imigrants you want by reducing those that are just parasites.
This is terrific

the bill seeks to move everything to a points based system where those with higher education etc etc are prioritized.

Why not? : )

The higher education should be in STEM. Lord knows, we don't need more idiots with degrees in sociology or Ancient Etruscan Mythology. Anyone who wastes 4 years of their life learning a subject that has no marketplace value is a moron and we don't want them.

I think 1 million is excessive. How is not?

That said, I admit to hiring people who stand out by home depot etc, looking for work. My wife was injured and unable to help with two moves and I called "legit" businesses and they wanted at least $600 for what I hired two guys to for $200 and holy crap they worked like lightening. I don't know if they were illegal or not, but I do know at the time it was much for affordable. If Americans want to compete, then have better rates. These guys literally did the move in two hours. No way I'm paying someone 150 and hour to move stuff. Hell, when I was in college I help professors and some other people move for 10 dollars and hour.

This is smart politics. We aren't required to take these people in and Trump wants to ensure we get the best and brightest.

This is why you are so frustrating. You claim to be a conservative. You constantly bemoan what a left wing shithole California has become, yet you staunchly support the one single policy that has turned Commiefornia into that shithole.

The California we all once knew and loved was once reliably Republican until they were able to successfully able to flood the state with cheap, uneducated, low skilled labor and giving them free benefits.

Commiefornia of today is a cautionary tale of what awaits the rest of our country if we do not get this under control. The left is attempting the same tactic in states like Texas, Virginia,North Carolina and Georgia.

You need to wake up and realize that the policy you support is leading to your downfall

Californias fvcked because of the amount of illegal immigration. To me, conservatives have always been pro-growth, pro-markets, pro-trade and pro the free movement of people. If people want to come to this country and do it by the rules legally I'm good with it. Immigrants contribute to economic vitality and growth that we need to continue to be the world's economic superpower. I don't want to end up like the Western European countries with an aging population, low growth and high unemployment.

And nothing in this plan would hinder that.

When we have a problem with the underemployed and unemployed youth, claiming we need more people is just ignorant and ignores the larger problem.

By limiting the number of cheap labor you boost wages which reduces welfare rolls which increases tax collections which reduces the deficit and debt. Very simple really

This plan doesn't eliminate all immigration it just specifies who want to join our elite club called the United States. That is our right. Nothing says we should take any and everybody.

Everyone quotes the Statue of Liberty line that was added years after it was given to us but that quote is not a law
