The Trump administration is set to officially label over eight Latin American cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, granting the U.S. broad powers to sanction and target them.
The groups include Mexico’s Sinaloa, Jalisco New Generation, Northeast, Michoacán Family, and United Cartels, as well as Colombia’s Gulf Clan, Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, and MS-13.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio says cartels pose a national security threat, fueling illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking into the U.S.
The White House may announce the designations this week.
