Neither the West or East Wings are part of the actual White House; they are separate buildings, set apart from the actual White House:
The East Wing is connected to the rest of the White House by the East Colonnade. It is a long hallway enclosed by walls. So the East Wing is part of the White House, connected to the rest of the White House.
You can clearly see the East Colonnade with its orange roof, and windows connecting the Residence to the East Wing. The West Colonnade connects the West Wing to the Residence. They are all connected in one building, as you can clearly see in the photo.
