Even then he wasn't very good at politics, which is what seemed to make some folks like him even though he isn't particularly conservative, supported tariffs (which republicans hated until the moment he was elected) and told folks that the constitution should have been suspended when he lost an election. I haven't ever seen him "good at politics"... He isn't even good at just acting like a President. His own wife told him that he should act "more presidential"...
