Pretty damn cool... landing a one ton rover. Only $2.5b to do so. A very tiny cost for the data it is likely to provide. It will be interesting to see what all they can learn from this high tech lab on wheels.
thankfully we never shut down NASA like the right wanted most of my life

U.S. President Barack Obama will ask Congress for $17.7 billion for NASA for 2013, an amount that would leave the agency funded at its lowest level in four years, according to sources familiar with the forthcoming budget proposal.
NASA’s planetary science division would shoulder a heavy share of the cut. Under the president’s proposal, its budget would drop from $1.5 billion to $1.2 billion, a 20 percent reduction.

I'd like some info on that...when and how did he do this?LOL... truly hilarious Desh, given that it was OBAMA that called for cutting NASA's robotic budget... which is precisely where this rover came from.
What was budgeted for NASA in the GOP budget??
A 2013 spending bill that would fund NASA’s commercial crew program below the level President Barack Obama requested drew a veto threat Monday (May 7) as the U.S. House of Representatives was preparing to begin debate on the proposal.
The $51 billion Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Act for 2013 (H.R. 5326) that the Republican-led House began debating today (May 8) would fund NASA at $17.56 billion next year — the lowest level since 2008 and some $150 million less than President Obama requested for the agency.
NASA’s commercial crew program — a two-year-old effort that aims to foster development by 2017 of at least two privately operated launchers capable of transporting crews to the International Space Station — would receive $500 million next year under the House spending measure, which is $330 million below the White House request.

Obama cut the maned projects because there is more we can do without maned projects

That budget calls for deep cuts to the nation’s planetary science program, a drop of more than 20 percent. The reduction in NASA's planetary budget by $309 million includes cutting the Mars exploration program by $130 million.
This project will provide inspiration for generations to come...and if you visit NASA's website you can see what's working and being planned for. We have benefited from the space program in so many ways that people either aren't aware of or don't recognize. I hope this mission rekindles our space program and the funding is increased accordingly. I agree with you...we are doing such wonderful science and groundwork for the future using unmanned probs...we could be doing much more with more funding.
Read the article I posted #10, the baggers cut it more....LOL... read the article desh... he cut the robotics budget...
