Egyptian-Israeli relations - signs of a thaw?

The revolution in Egypt in 2011, which resulted in the election of a Muslim Brotherhood parliament and president, led influential voices within Egypt to call for the treaty with Israel to be revoked. The new government decided to abide by its international treaties, but the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt during 2012-2013 was a golden age for Hamas, the de facto government in Gaza. In preparation for its next conflict with Israel, missiles and massive quantities of ammunition moved through the tunnels dug between Egypt and Gaza, together with the materials needed to manufacture armaments.

Egypt’s second revolution a year later, which replaced Mohammed Morsi with Fattah al-Sisi as president, turned the situation on its head. Sisi declared total war against the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and by extension its offshoot Hamas in Gaza. He designated both groups terrorist organizations, and was ruthless in rooting out their leaders and supporters. He shut down the crossing at Rafah through which armaments once flowed into Gaza, and destroyed more than a thousand tunnels running under the Egypt-Gaza border, Hamas’s secret conduit for supplies it could not obtain through Israel.

The Brotherhood responded to its overthrow by mounting a full-scale terrorist campaign, in conjunction with Hamas, both within Egypt proper and in the Sinai peninsula, where terrorist groups roamed at will, committing atrocity after atrocity. These jihadi groups represented as great a threat to Israel as to Egypt, and the two countries began to cooperate more closely than ever before on military, security and intelligence issues.

It was in July-August 2014, during Operation Protective Edge – Israel’s response to Hamas’s rocket attacks – that realization began to dawn in Egypt’s media and élite that Egypt and Israel were fighting shoulder to shoulder against a common enemy. Public figures began voicing support for Israel’s military operation in the Gaza Strip.

"Thank you Netanyahu,” wrote Azza Sami of the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, “and may God give us more like you to destroy Hamas!" Addressing Gazan Palestinians, Egyptian actor Amr Mustafa told them not to expect any help from Egypt. "You must get rid of Hamas,” he said, “and then we will help you." On a TV program Egyptian presenter Amany al-Khayat launched a scathing attack on Hamas. "Hamas is prepared to make all the residents of the Gaza Strip pay a heavy price,” she said. “We must not forget that Hamas is the armed branch of the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist movement." Egyptian ex-general Hamdi Bakhit actually expressed the hope that Israel would re-occupy the Gaza Strip.

On May 28, 2015, prominent...

So, in Egypt at least, the Arab Spring, has gone through at least two cycles of rebellion and government change, and the second ushered in an Anti-Muslim Brotherhood government which is now working to oust HAMAS and thaw relations between Egypt and Israel.

Lets hope this trend continues.

Given recent developments releasing information on Obama's attitude toward Israel:

Obama: Anti-Israel, Anti-West | National Review

Obama Despises Israel Because He Despises the West

by Ben Shapiro December 28, 2016 4:00 AM

A religious leftist, he breaks down Bible believers into two categories: fools and liars.

Barack Obama has done his best for nearly eight years to undermine the state of Israel. He’s signed a treaty that enshrines an Iranian path to a nuclear weapon while funding their global terrorist activities to the tune of tens of billions of dollars. He’s repeatedly undercut Israel’s image on the world stage, labeling Israel a mere outgrowth of the Holocaust and suggesting that Israeli intransigence stands as the chief obstacle to peace.

He’s ushered Benjamin Netanyahu out the side door of the White House, attempted to undercut the prime minister’s speech before Congress, and then deployed an election team to Israel to try to defeat him in an election. Obama has tried to cut weapons shipments to Israel in the middle of a war against terrorists, forced Israel to apologize for stopping weapons shipments to Hamas terrorists, and funded the Palestinian terrorist unity government with American taxpayer dollars.

Nonetheless, Israel has survived.

And the turn toward Anti-Semitism by the Democratic Party:

Blog: Obama's hatred of Israel will rebound

December 27, 2016

By Karin McQuillan

We're now in the Trump era. Time to drop the euphemisms. Time for consequences. Obama is not motivated by

personal "pique" at Netanyahu.

Anti-Zionism is not personal; it is ideological, and it is widely popular among the Democrat base.

Whereas anti-Semitism has shrunk to 3% of the white population in America, the ADL estimates that it is 22-36% among blacks and Latinos. It is much higher than that among leftists.

Obama has chafed at the need to put on a mainstream front. Now he is baring his leftist teeth. The effect is more mean than frightening, and it will not have the outcome he wants.

Obama hates Israel, as he hates America. He is the spiritual son of his Marxist father and of the openly anti-Semitic and anti-white Reverend Wright, as Obama told us from the first. To the left, Israel and America are evil imperialists. Obama has always wanted to cut Israel and America down to size.
Obama's last-ditch efforts to leave a legacy reveal his animus: flood our country with murderous jihadi "refugees" and make Israel a pariah nation in international courts. It is a big "F you" from our perfidious president.

And the development of the OFA:

Articles: Obama, Organizing for Action, and the Death Throes of the Democratic Party

Obama, Organizing for Action, and the Death Throes of the Democratic Party
By Scott S. Powell

If you think you’re going crazy from nonstop news coverage of unruly behavior and disruptive protests across the country since Donald Trump was elected president, rest assured there are veiled reasons for the current madness. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael Goodwin asserts the ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome,’ is no temporarily insane reaction, but rather “a calculated plan to wreck the presidency, whatever the cost to the country.”

The beginnings of this “rolling coup” happened in broad daylight in the taking down of Lieutenant General Michael Flynn as Director of National Security by residual players within the Obama intelligence community -- including the CIA and the NSA.

Political correctness remains so dominant in language and culture in the U.S., that no one dares utter the word "sedition." Unbeknownst to most Americans, Barack Obama is the first ex-president in 228 years of U.S. history to structure and lead a political organization, a shadow government, for the explicit purpose of sabotaging his successor -- duly elected President Donald Trump. The primary vehicle of this campaign is Organizing for Action (OFA), legally founded in January 2013 by First Lady Michelle Obama and...

So..., Were you aware of these developments? Until Recently, I was not...

Can Trump enable this event, to enable others like it, in the other countries in which Obama put the Mulsim Brotherhood into power, to in effect, Reverse the negative impacts of the "Arab Spring"?

Does this explain the recent actions of Obama in settling into D.C. with Valerie Jarrett right in his home, and the creation of the OFA, Organizing-for-Action?

Does this mean that the Democratic Party, in 2016, has not just lost the majority of the working White Vote, but also the American Jewish Vote?

Al-Sisi is a totalitarian dictator and he will be overthrown and executed. Death to Israel, the most evil nation in the world after the fascist empire that now occupies the territory in which America once stood.

I know the Royal House of Saud and SA both NEED the west to support their conflict with the Oman and Yemen rebels.

But, the fact that in the past, the Saud Royal house has been closely tied to Wahabbi doctrine and its connection to AQ doesn't bode well.

Still, our alliance with SA is currently the best non-Israeli Alliance in the Region.

nobody's perfect? :)

Wahhabism/Salafi is now well past any singular influence from SA. It's worldwide.
In fact SA has an internal war going on with AQ.

There are reasons for our "special relationship" with SA -yes, and Iran is the regional belligerent -
so whether we love them or hate them -SA is our realpolitik card.

PS. Yemen civil war is an other SA/Iran proxie war ( aside from the locals players)

It is often that those who are too weak to oppose the occupation of their nation by fascist forces are seen as crazed by those strong enough to realize that overthrow is the only solution to their nations problems. You will go down in history as a collaborationist, we will go down in history as the Americans who initiated the second American revolution and restored America to self-rule.

most interesting is the linking of anti-terrorism cooperation by Israel and Egypt in the Sinai.

Anti-terror cooperation strong with Egypt: Israel
http://www.chinapost.com.tw/international/middle-east/2017/01/13/489248/Anti-terror-cooperation.htm

An Israeli defense official on Wednesday confirmed that the country has developed a new policy in recent years to allow Egypt to quickly beef up its forces in the volatile Sinai Peninsula as part of a shared struggle against Islamic militants.

In addition to the troops, Egypt's military is also known to have deployed F-16 fighter jets as well as Apache helicopter gunships and tanks in northern Sinai. Egypt's close coordination with Israel in the fight against IS in Sinai is widely believed to be helping to fuel the insurgency.

Israel, which is bitter enemies with the Hamas militant group in the neighboring Gaza Strip, sees Egypt as an important ally in the battle against Islamic militant groups in the region and the two countries have close security and intelligence ties.
