If the video below is any indication of how Russian troops are fighting, it's no wonder they're losing:
Those are small unit tactics of amateurs who are completely untrained in urban warfare. A lot of what you see is "spray and pray" fire. That is, they're using up ammo without hitting a thing. It isn't suppressive fire as they aren't using it to maneuver forward while conducting it.
It looks like the guy with the red backpack is a senior NCO or officer and his direction of the troops is all but worthless. The troop's movements are uncoordinated and sloppy.
