This is what we should have done after J6

in all seriousness, on Day 1 of Merrick Garlands being sworn in as AG he should have stood before the media and said "We all witnessed a horrifying attack on Congress and both the House and Senate Leaders (Republicans) have joined the call for Investigation and Justice, and as such my first act will be to appoint a Special Prosecutor to immediately begin to bring all those to justice who were involved in it'.

It would have had full public support outside the most die hard magats, but even they would not be surprised because of what McCarthy and McConnell were saying publicly.

Instead Garland sat on his hands for years and allowed politics to take over the topic.

It was truly shameful.
