This is what I am talking about when I say you don't own a Tesla you rent it.

Tesla Locks Its Trailer Mode Software Against Third-Party Hitches

In today’s absurd market, it’s hard to find the right car. With chip and materials shortages still running rampant in the auto industry, people are often stuck buying whatever color, trim level, or options package they can find on a local lot. For many buyers, this means turning to dealerships or third-party providers to get those last few accessories, but it seems Tesla is only approving of the former — blocking owners of third-party trailer hitch receivers from using the company’s Trailer Mode software.

On its surface, the move makes some sense. After all, there’s nothing stopping me from duct-taping a 2.5" receiver to a Model Y and then suing Tesla when its Trailer Mode fails to keep my 40-foot yacht securely attached to the car. But, as The Drive explored, the situation isn’t quite so clear-cut.

If you live in the United Kingdom, you can’t buy a first-party tow package for your Tesla. They’ve been out of stock for months, with no return date in sight. You can, however, pick up a third-party hitch that’s built to certain standards of quality and strength — the same standards to which Tesla’s own hitch is held. But, if you do purchase one of these third-party receivers, don’t be surprised when Tesla demands you remove it.

The Drive spoke with a Tesla owner to whom this request was made, and who was told by the company that his car “is not able to tow anything, as it does not have the tow package installed.”

But, But, But CLIMATE CHANGE! (In truth, I don't think they want you to tow anything heavier than a lightly packed overnight bag because of what it does to the range).

Toyota is already renting out seat warmer software, and GM will be doing it soon. You pay for seat warmers, and you pay for the energy that the seat warmers use. You even have to pay to repair the seat warmer if it breaks. In every way you are buying the seat warmer, except one. The software to turn on the seat warmer is a subscription. You have to pay $50(or some similar amount of money) a month just to use your own seat warmer.

So you say why can't you just use your own free software? Republicans have always pushed to make that illegal.

I've got a 1962 Corvette.
I wish that I had a similar period Lincoln Continental to go with it.

Except for the built-in GPS, backup camera. and lane-change assist, modern cars, petrol or electric, are all drek.
I don't even give a fuck about the blue teeth to which you connect your cell phone.

The fucking head restraints on my Grand Cherokee are so fucking tall that I can't even wear my fedoras in the car.
All modern cars suck.

Bullshit. You want your ass warm? Set it on fire.

I forgot the seat warmers.

I like the GPS, the backup cameras, the lane change assist, and, of course, the seat warmers.

Otherwise, modern cars seriously suck.

If they can do it with seat warmers, they can do it with key fobs that start the car. They can even do it with keys that start the car. They can charge you money to start your own car.

I have one of the last stick shifts ever made at a reasonable price... Even the unreasonably expensive sports cars are phasing them out.

The nice part about my car is that Blue Tooth works, so I can listen to The Economist from my cell phone, but also have a stick shift. Best of all, most robbers could not steal the car, because almost no one knows how to drive a stick anymore.

Being 76 years old, I can obviously drive a car with a manual gearbox. Even my wife can. Before she was a mom, she was a terror in her solid lifter '66 Mustang.

But I tend to agree with Ferrari and Corvette who no longer offer it--it's totally obsolete technology.

What's better than cruising through city traffic in automatic, and then paddling into manual mode whenever you feel like it?

I love lots of stuff from the 50s and 60s, but clutch pedals don't necessarily land at the very top of the list.

You are starting to understand what conservative libertarians have been saying for years.
