Here's a question that never gets answered, why is it nearly every time a conservative attempts to go off on socialism we get the same examples of Venezuela or some other failing authoritarian nation, yet, no mention is ever made of the Scandinavian nations or similar social democracies worldwide, some of which have a higher standard of living than the US?

A North Korean defector has told of Kim Jong Un’s teen sex slaves, lavish caviar lunches and gory public executions.
Hee Yeon Lim, 26, is the daughter of a high-ranking soldier from Pyongyang and a member of the regime’s inner circle.
But when her father, Col. Wui Yeon Lim, 51, passed away, she and her family decided to flee the country in 2015.
Now in South Korea, Hee Yeon has spoken of what life was like inside the secretive rogue state.
She told the Mirror she saw “terrible things” in her home city of Pyongyang despite her family’s relative privilege.
She said officials came to her school to pick out teen schoolgirls to work at the chubby dictator’s homes.
The escapee said they would only choose the prettiest girls, who were taught to feed him caviar and massage him.
If they refused, they would “disappear,” she said.
Hee Yeon — who has met the despot — also told how he would dine out on imported delicacies like caviar and Chinese “bird’s nest soup,” which can cost $2,700 a kilo (2.2 pounds).
And she described one occasion when she was forced to watch as a group of 11 musicians accused of making a pornographic video were slaughtered.
Hee Yeon told how she and her classmates were ordered out of their classrooms in the middle of the day by soldiers who took them to a stadium at the city’s Military Academy.
She said the hooded and gagged victims were brought out and tied to the end of anti-aircraft guns in front of some 10,000 spectators.
The escapee then recalled how the guns were fired one by one, saying: “The musicians just disappeared each time the guns were fired into them.
“Their bodies were blown to bits, totally destroyed, blood and bits flying everywhere.”
Afterward, Hee Yeon said tanks moved in and ran over the pieces of the victims’ bodies.
She added: “The tracks of the tanks were run over the remains and blood repeatedly, over and over again and made to grind the remains, to smash them into the ground until there was nothing left.”
Left feeling “desperately ill” after the grim spectacle, she later decided to escape the country.

Following the closing of independent media outlets and the arrest of Cambodia's opposition leader, officials in Phnom Penh have begun training their verbal fire on the U.S., adding to mounting anxiety in the Cambodian capital among government critics and media workers.
On Friday, senior Cambodian military officials pledged “the elimination” of all foreigners deemed intent to commit aggression against the country, according to statements reported by government mouthpiece Fresh News.
The comments were posted on the same day Prime Minister Hun Sen declared two American "spies" plotting to overthrow his government had been identified and ordered the investigation of all U.S. citizens suspected of conducting espionage.
In the same speech, he also suggested the U.S. Peace Corps should pull out of Cambodia and the week before he suspended a program to identify and repatriate the remains of U.S. soldiers lost during the Vietnam War.
In statements, Lieutenant General Prum Pheng, Commander of Intervention Brigade 1, and Lieutenant General Bun Seng, a Deputy Commander of the Army and Commander of Military Region 5, vowed to carry out the investigations ordered by Hun Sen.
Fresh News reported the men, both of whom are members of the ruling party’s central committee, had pledged "determination to smash each and every person whose intent it is to make revolution.”
“We all are the soldiers who have the duty to protect the land. [We] support Samdech Decho [Hun Sen], Prime Minister of Cambodia who rescued Cambodia from the war, to be united to eliminate any invading foreigners,” they said in identical statements.
Defense Ministry spokesman Chhum Socheat defended the threats and would not unconditionally guarantee the safety of foreigners against such actions.
"The situation is normal and the government protects all foreigners unless they did something wrong or against the government," he said. “We welcome all foreigners who come for tourism legally and don’t do any act against the government and national security,” he said, adding that the internal security is normal.
The definition of what constituted an “act against the government” is being interpreted increasingly broadly under vague Cambodian espionage laws, said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director of Human Rights Watch.

Socialism has been getting a bad rap lately. True, it entails poverty and tyranny, and often genocide. Yes, it recently reduced the wealthiest nation in Latin America to economic ruin.
But it has its positive side. For example, even as their countrymen starve and hyperinflation has reduced the local currency to worthlessness, socialism allows dictator Robert Mugabe’s relatives to live high on the hog:

The two vehicles – valued at more then 70 million – were offloaded at Harare International Airport. Their arrival sparked a huge celebration with French champagne flowing for Goreraza and his Harare friends, all close to the first family.
Goreraza has told pals in Harare his next vehicle, due to arrive in the Zimbabwe capital shortly, is an Aston Martin.
