This is just wrong-headed

KABUL, Afghanistan — The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan warned Tuesday an American church's threat to burn copies of the Muslim holy book could endanger U.S. troops in the country and Americans worldwide.

Meanwhile, NATO reported the death of an American service member in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The comments from Gen. David Petraeus followed a protest Monday by hundreds of Afghans over the plans by Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center — a small, evangelical Christian church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy — to burn copies of the Quran on church grounds to mark the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States that provoked the Afghan war.

"Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan — and around the world — to inflame public opinion and incite violence," Petraeus said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Muslims consider the Quran to be the word of God and insist it be treated with the utmost respect, along with any printed material containing its verses or the name of Allah or the Prophet Muhammad. Any intentional damage or show of disrespect to the Quran is deeply offensive.

Yes, it is "wrong-headed" for this quasi church to plan such an event as this. No good can come of it and I agree with General Petraeus 100%.

while I can give General Petraeus the respect due to him, he should have kept his mouth shut on this. Our troops are already in danger, the terrorists already hate us 24/7 and would continue to go after our troops, and us, regardless if a quran is burnt or not.

You don't think getting out in front of something like this is important? He is trying to build bridges and this kind of thing is like a powder keg tied to the pilons underneath. He does not strike me as commander who speaks out willy-nilly???

Just weird!

WASHINGTON/KABUL (Worthy News)-- The president of a US-based group helping Christians persecuted for their faith has expressed outrage that United States military personnel have burned confiscated Bibles in Afghanistan.

"It really should shake the core of every Christian to realize that Bibles are being burned," said Carl Moeller President of Open Doors USA in an interview with Mission Network News monitored Friday, May 22, by Worthy News.

The Bibles, printed in the two most common Afghan languages, were burned amid concern they would be used to try to convert Afghans, the Cable News Network (CNN) quoted a a Defense Department spokesman as saying.

here's the thing about our occupation of iraq and afghanistan. We are trying to build a society based on freedom over there. building bridges and all is great, but we must also accept reality and realize that there is always going to be a certain percentage of their population that does not agree with us and nothing is ever going to change that. BUT, by demonstrating to those over there that truly wish to live free lives, we can win those hearts and minds.....and hopefully over time they can win over their own.

Ouch. A really bad decision was made by the us military. I'm not saying they should have gone ahead and distrubuted these bibles or not confiscated them in the first place, but the decision to burn them was indeed unfortunate.

From the article:
"However military analyst and Pentagon adviser, Lt. Col. Robert Maginnis, criticized the move. "There is no need to burn the Bibles. They could have been shipped back," he said. "Just imagine if we, the same the United States military, were to take a bunch of Korans and burn them. I can imagine the ramifications across the world.""

If you ask me this man [Maginnis] is thinking with all of his faculties. I still agree with Petreaus that it is a bad idea to burn Korans on 9/11....or anytime.

This is right-headed. We need to confront islam on it's own terms, and judge it hashly as thinking and rational people.

It's a poisonous ideology, to which we should not grant an iota of respect.

Our tolerance should not tolerate intolerance. That's a recipe for losing our freedom under a theocratic regime.

The church here is free to burn whatever they want. So long as they don't violate any ordinances, burn baby burn. It is a good idea? Probably not? Did this church REALLY make the radical islamists hate us MORE than they otherwise would have? Again, probably not. Maybe one day we will realized that NOTHING we do is going to soften the hate of those followers of Islam. This is really a non-story and the only reason it has become a story is because the press has fed need for publicity. I know the pastor of the church has been on several news shows and is seeking publicity for his event. If we just ignored it it would not have mattered much in the scheme of things.

It's a great idea. This is the message we should send about islam.

What do you know anyway? You believe in racial discrimination as a tool of justice in the form of Affirmative Action. You have no credibility.

Building bridges to theocratic murderers just gives them a modernized path of attack.

Bad idea.

My point was that we do have men in harms way and I agree with the general that inciting violence is a likely outcome.

In addition I think it is just plain NOT the purview of the church to be burning another religions holy book...

Again, this is not about what the are free to do...though I wonder if inciting violence is a recognized freedom. This is about the propriety of a church burning a religious book of another faith...

I wonder.

"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful."

True that. As wrong as Phelps and his crowd, but with international consequences.
