Taney's court made awful decisions, but, I don't think that he dragged the court into those decisions. Douglas was so extreme, that he would even shock other radicals, such as Black, with his decisions. He would do such weird, and unconstitutional things, that the eight other members would have to convene and unanimously overrule him.

Taney on the other hand authored the biggest self inflected wound in the entire history of SCOTUS one that in no small measure accelerated the march towards Civil War.

It was a 7-2 decision; there was plenty of blame to go around. Douglas was the worst the Court has ever been saddled with, and it's not even close. And he ruled in favour of Roe and Korematsu, which is just as bad as Dred Scott.

Jackson was an evil man. Speaking of civil liberties, Old Dickory declared martial law in Nawlins after the battle, and proceeded to run roughshod over them, including throwing a journalist and a judge into jail.
