It really started as a basic statement indicating the idea staying aware of racial & social injustice.
And if you think about it that way: is that really a bad thing? Is that really an awareness we don't want people to have?
Personally, I hate hearing the term now, from anyone on either side. It's more of a distracting term. But that's a real tribute to the propaganda wars waged by the right-wing in this country. They're not good at much - but they're fantastic as demonizing & manipulating public opinion.
